Your Opportunity:

The purpose of this position is to facilitate Allied Health research in the area of paediatric oncology. This includes participating in existing clinical trial and other research studies being conducted in this area and initiating new research projects. You will be expected to support Allied Health clinicians and clinician-researchers in project design, implementation, data analysis and publication. You will address the challenges of conducting clinical research for Allied Health professionals and promote research and evaluation projects that can translate to improved outcomes for children and adolescents impacted by cancer. You will be expected to foster collaborations with key campus researchers and external organisations (e.g., ANZCHOG VCCC etc.) and to undertake grant applications with the aim of securing research funds. You will participate as a member of the Cancer and Chronic Illness group, contributing to multidisciplinary research activities and team/theme activities as requested.

Your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Undertaking Allied Health research project(s) with translational impact for children, adolescents and families impacted by childhood cancer.
  • Providing leadership and support to oncology-based Allied Health clinicians (including, but not limited, to physiotherapy, occupational therapy, child life and music therapy, dietetics, speech pathology) to undertake clinical research and evaluation projects.
  • Promoting a culture of research and enquiry among allied health clinicians working in paediatric oncology.
  • Fostering collaboration with other research groups to contribute to collaborative, multidisciplinary research.
  • Examining opportunity to contribute allied health research to existing end-of treatment and survivorship projects.
  • Conducting ethical research at the highest level of integrity and in line with the Australian Code for Responsible Conduct of Research and MCRI policies.
  • Conducting research activities in alignment with the strategic direction of the Institute.
  • Is competitive for an NHMRC Emerging Leadership Investigator Grant or equivalent.
  • Attracting external competitive funding and has a record of high-quality publications, potential commercial/clinical/public health research impact and peer recognition.
  • Has the ability to lead a research team/project and develop, manage and mentor employees to create a positive scientific research culture.
  • Co-supervising, or where appropriate, supervising honours or postgraduate research projects.
  • Is engaged in the campus culture including professional development activities, membership of campus committees and contributing to/attending internal/external campus conferences and seminars.
  • Making significant and/or independent contributions to grant submissions and publications including lead authorship.
  • Making contributions to external journal and grant reviews.
  • Fostering relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Evaluating opportunities for translation/commercialisation if appropriate.
  • May manage project/grant finances.
  • Conducting continuous maintenance of neat and orderly records, lab books and data storage.

Selection Criteria

  • Relevant PhD/Doctoral qualification.
  • At least 3 years postdoctoral experience (relative to opportunity) and appropriate level of expertise gained from a combination of experience, training or professional accreditation.
  • Is competitive for own funding.
  • Building a reputation at a National level as an outstanding researcher and is working towards building an international reputation.
  • Track record in research leadership and/or knowledge translation.
  • Evidence of postdoctoral research outputs and impact as evidenced by publication records (including first or senior author papers), conference attendance.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Advanced communication, presentation and writing skills.
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to lead and mentor employees in order to foster a positive scientific research culture.
  • Education and supervision of future researchers and successful higher degree student completions.
