  • Location: Office: 2 Lee Street, Brunswick East, Victoria. Hybrid working remotely available.
  • Hours: 70 hours/fortnight, including occasional after-hours meetings. Potential for part-time.
  • Classification: Band 8 (in accordance with MCMC EBA), from $93,598.60 to $102,835 p.a.

Manage a highly-regarded not for profit organisation with more than 20 committed staff undertaking ecological restoration, advocacy, community engagement and citizen science programs focused on a valued waterway in northern Melbourne.

The organisation

Merri Creek Management Committee (MCMC) champions and advances the protection, restoration and stewardship of the Merri Creek, its tributaries and environs. We work closely with the community and governments. MCMC members are the six municipal Councils in the Merri Creek catchment, plus Friends of Merri Creek and Wallan Environment Group.

This position

Key responsibilities include:

  • Undertaking executive functions to support good governance for MCMC
  • Overseeing implementation and review of MCMC’s Strategic Plan and other organisational priorities
  • Budgeting, funding, program management and reporting
  • Overseeing staff management, development and training
  • Ensuring occupational health and safety compliance
  • Overseeing sound strategic advice and advocacy to achieve MCMC’s purposes
  • Communications and representation of MCMC
  • Maintaining effective working relationships with staff, members, agencies and relevant stakeholders

The person

You'll need to be flexible, responsive and prepared to take on new challenges as they emerge. In managing this relatively small organisation you'll need to take on a lot of responsibility and tasks yourself. You will have a demonstrated commitment to environmental protection and ecological restoration, and experience in leading and motivating staff to sustain a positive, outcome-focused culture.

A degree in natural resource management, ecology or environmental sciences or similar, or a tertiary qualification plus management experience in the NRM field, is considered essential. Substantial experience is required in the management of budgets, contracts and projects. In addition to excellent communication skills, the person will have demonstrated ability to collaborate and work effectively with a diverse range of people. Knowledge and experience in waterway or other environmental management is highly desirable.
