About the Art Centre

Injalak Arts & Craft Aboriginal Corporation is celebrating 31 years as an established art centre run by an indigenous Board of Directors. This work continues at the foot of Injalak Hill, which holds some of the most significant rock art in the world and continues an art making tradition which is over 65,000 years old. Injalak’s artists create paintings on paper and bark, carvings, weavings, textile design and screen-printing, multimedia projects and much more.

The art centre offers important opportunities for the people of Gunbalanya and surrounding homelands not only in terms of employment and other economic development, but social, cultural, health and wellbeing. The art centre is internationally renowned for its representation of Kunwinjku traditions.

About the Board

Injalak Arts & Craft Aboriginal Corporation is an Aboriginal-owned social enterprise, regulated by the Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations (ORIC) and is governed by the Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act 2006.

The Board is currently comprised of:

• 10 Directors (who are all residents of Gunbalanya)
• 1 Independent Director (Based in Darwin)

About the Opportunity

Injalak Arts is seeking to appoint an additional independent Director to the Board. Expressions of interest are invited from experienced executives motivated to contribute and participate in the governance, leadership and commercial oversight of Injalak Arts in its important role of operating a unique remote area arts and culture based social enterprise.

Prior board experience is preferred and persons with expertise and/or interest in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts and cultural organisations or art centres are encouraged to apply. Applications from individuals with finance, legal, business or other professional backgrounds will be highly regarded. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate strong understanding of the role of the board, executive and stakeholder partners in the strategic and commercial oversight of an organisation.

Applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are encouraged, but this is not a designated/identified Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander appointment.
