Outreach Counsellors - New Horizons

The New Horizons Program provides early intervention, counselling and outreach support to families with children and young people (0-18 years) who are showing early signs of mental health concerns or are at risk of developing such. Our goal is to create lasting positive change in the lives of vulnerable families, children and young people while offering meaningful career opportunities for our staff. The case complexities and demands of this role can be tailored to suit novice professionals as well as experienced practitioners

The Role

In this role you will engage with vulnerable families via a psycho-social assessment process and tailored intervention planning. Both are geared towards improving family functioning and optimising children’s and young people’s developmental potential.

Our service delivery is designed to successfully foster and maintain clients’ engagement via home visits, school or community-based session, outreach counselling and support, psycho-educational group work, tele-health and effective referral pathways.

New Horizons practice is grounded in attachment and family systems theory. Our interventions are child-centred and family-focused. They are brought to life by a range of evidence-based modalities, each counsellor’s individual style and areas of expertise and practice interest.

Ideal person

The ideal person we are looking for has:

  • Bachelor of Social Work (including eligibility for membership of Australian Association of Social Workers) or a Psychology or Counselling Degree. Preference for registration with AHPRA, ACA or PACFA (level 3 or 4)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of lifespan development and impacts of adverse childhood experiences.
  • Experience in providing evidence-based, therapeutic interventions with children, adolescents and their families who are experiencing or are at risk of experiencing mental ill health.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working within a child safe framework that is client-centred and family-focused.
  • Excellent relationship building skills to maintain effective stakeholder relationships and contribute to a safe and supportive team culture.

To be considered for this role you will also be required to hold:

  • A current Driver’s License;
  • A Working with Vulnerable People Card (ACT); and
  • A Working with Children Check (NSW)

You will also be required to undergo a National Police Check.
