Position overview

The position is for a locally based, full time Youth Recovery Officer who will provide services across both Mallacoota and Cann Valley districts to support the needs of young people in their recovery and resilience following the 2019/2020 Bushfires.

The YRO will consult with young people and youth organisations to support youth-led recovery initiatives for the broader young person’s population. This will require working collaboratively with the local, state and Australia wide networks of youth social welfare and bushfire recovery programs and agencies.  The YRO will also work directly with young people in the area to provide case management and advocacy, if appropriately qualified or through partnership with other key agencies, if required.  

The YRO will work within the dynamic health and support team managed by the Mallacoota Medical Centre and be employed by the Mallacoota Community Health Infrastructure and Resilience Fund (CHIRF) - a local charity organisation https://www.chirf.org.au 

This exciting new role will provide an opportunity for capacity building within a new locally based youth services sector by ensuring supervision, role development and training, with a focus on building the community, government and the joint organisation's abilities to meet the diverse needs of our local young people over time.  

We are looking for a person with a broad range of skills and experience, and/or who is willing to further their skills and encourage applicants who are able to work collaboratively and ethically to provide inclusive services that address the diverse needs of the young people in our area.

Key position criteria

The successful applicant will 

  • Have tertiary qualifications in Social Work, Youth Work or a related area of study 
  • Have substantial experience in social welfare or education sectors, with more than 3 years’ experience working with young people.

have knowledge of and willingness to work within the Code of Ethical Practice for the Victorian Youth Sector, Trauma informed care and Victoria Child Safe Standards

  • Have the ability to develop strong rapport with a diverse range of young people throughout the district
  • Enjoy working collaboratively within a team environment and be well organised with sound IT knowledge 
  • Able to assist in the development of local youth services through providing the organisation with assistance with program development and implementation, evaluation, reporting requirements, further grant submissions and positive stakeholder relationships that support the position. 

The successful applicant will be required to complete a national police check and to hold a current Working with Children Check and hold a current Drivers Licence. The Successful applicant will be required to work irregular hours on occasion (evenings and weekends, as required).
