Chief Operating Officer - Cairns

With over 650 staff (operating in more than 15 countries worldwide), MAF International is passionate about using light aircraft and other technologies to bring physical and spiritual transformation to isolated people in Jesus’ name.

MAF International has a new opportunity for an experienced international leader to join our Executive Leadership Team as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) to be based in Cairns, Australia.

As COO, you will report to our Chief Executive Officer, and take on the leadership and responsibility for the delivery of the operational strategy, safety and sustainability of MAF International’s operational programmes, the Aviation and Quality, Safety and Security departments as well as providing leadership to our Cairns support office. This role will also take a lead on the digital transformation of the organisation.

As a MAF is a Christian mission organisation, you will have a key role in the spiritual leadership and pastoral oversight according to the ethos, beliefs and values of MAF. An essential part of this will be the leading of biblical reflection, prayer meetings and mentoring colleagues, inspiring and encouraging the multinational team to flourish.

In addition, you will continuously develop, implement and maintain our overall operational strategy ensuring both long and short-term objectives are set, and resources focused to deliver desired results.

The ability to cultivate strong collaborative partnerships that lead to greater impact and effectiveness will be essential. This will include developing successful relationships with service users, aviation and other regulatory authorities in the places where our service is needed.

As this is an international role you will need to be prepared for frequent overseas travel of up to 12 weeks in any calendar year.

Finally, our the organisation operates within a highly regulated aviation industry; you will need to ensure all operational activities are carried out within approved regulatory and operating guidelines at the same time as managing finances within the annual budget by monitoring internal control systems and taking corrective action where necessary.

To be considered for the role you will need to:

  1. Hold a relevant aviation degree and ideally a management qualification (e.g. MBA or MSC in management);
  2. Have had extensive experience in:
    • a. the aviation industry. The minimum would be 10 years’ experience of which five or more would be in a similar role. Exposure to flight operations as a pilot would be a distinct advantage;
    • b. leading digital transformation across an organisation;
    • c. customer/partnership development;
    • d. strategic planning and operational delivery;
  3. Have experience of managing across international boundaries, multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams;
  4. Have exercised spiritual leadership in the Christian faith including leading, mentoring and growing a Christian team, including leading prayer and biblical reflections, and being passionate about sharing God’s love with remote people.

In addition, your skills will lie in thinking strategically and tactically. You will be a self-starter, analytical and a team player with a strong results orientation.
