About headspace Early Psychosis

We provide comprehensive early intervention services to young people aged 12 to 25 years experiencing an early episode of psychosis or at risk of developing psychosis. Our committed and compassionate multi-disciplinary team have a rich history of working with young people, their family, and carers to help young people achieve their recovery goals.

headspace Early Psychosis at Southport and Meadowbrook have a specially trained multi-disciplinary workforce to support young people with early psychosis and their families/carers. The team includes psychiatrists, psychiatric registrars (advanced trainees), psychologists, GP’s, social workers, occupational therapists, and mental health nurses. Clinicians working in this unique early intervention and prevention service offer ‘assertive outreach’ to young people who are at high risk of developing Early Psychosis or have had a first episode of Early Psychosis.

About the role

The Consultant Psychiatrist holds a key leadership position within the service in partnership with the team leaders and the service manager. You will work collaboratively with a range of Mental Health Clinicians across the service to promote comprehensive evidence-based psychiatric care that is youth friendly, safe, effective, and of a high standard, including:

  • Early intervention mental health treatment to young people aged 12-25 years who are referred to the service
  • Providing high quality care to achieve optimal outcomes for young people with a first episode of psychosis and their families
  • Clinical leadership, training, and supervision of medical staff, including two advanced trainee registrars
  • Oversee clinical review and quality assurance processes
  • Contributing to the development and maintenance of community partnerships with key external stakeholders
  • Developing effective interfaces across programs within the service, as well as facilitating relevant research activities

What do you need to apply?

  • Registration as a medical practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  • Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists
  • Clinical experience at the level of Consultant Psychiatrist
  • Extensive clinical medical experience within the mental health field in acute and community settings, ideally with early psychosis and first episode psychosis with young people and their families
  • Demonstrated clinical knowledge of biopsychosocial treatments of first episode psychosis
  • Substantial experience and demonstrated skill in crisis intervention and management of young people in the acute phase of a mental illness
  • Demonstrated achievement in training psychiatric registrars, postgraduate students, and clinical staff
  • Ability to apply the philosophy, guidelines, standards, and policies of the EPPIC model within a headspace platform
  • Child and Adolescent Certificate in addition to the General Fellowship (desirable)
