Free Online English Facilitator (voluntary)

League of Latin American Migrants Australia - LLAMA INCORPORATED

ABOUT THE ORGANISATION:

Established on 20 September 2021, League of Latin American Migrants Australia (LLAMA INCORPORATED) is a not-for-profit organisation based in Melbourne which provides free English online sessions for the Spanish-speaking community in Australia. The free sessions are also open to Latinos overseas who are considering coming to Australia in the future, but would like to improve their English first. In addition to free English classes, LLAMA provides informative free workshops and social activities for the Latin community in Australia.

LLAMA’s mission is to help international students, migrants, and the established members of Australia's Latin American community to integrate into Australian society through free online English classes and by familiarising Latinos with Australian culture.

LLAMA is a new organisation and growing quickly. Classes have begun and we will be launching our website and social media pages shortly. We are recruiting volunteer English facilitators to expand the number and range of our sessions.

ENGLISH COMPREHENSION SESSIONS:

LLAMA runs different kinds of online English sessions from basic to advanced level, 5 days a week from Monday to Friday at different hours from 8:00 am to 8:30 pm Melbourne time via Zoom. Sessions are grouped by:

  • Conversational English (LLAMA will propose the conversation topics)
  • Listening to English
  • Reading English
  • Writing English

All the sessions mentioned above are grouped under the name of Comprehension Club. Facilitators have discretion regarding which skills they would like to work on in each session. It is preferred to rotate through each of these aspects to develop participants’ skills.

Each session lasts an hour and a half, and they are delivered in a friendly setting without the pressure of being in a classroom. This allows participants to share their experiences with other people who are in the same situation. Group sizes ranges from 5 to 20 individuals. Students are assigned to you, so there is no need to build up your own student base.

THE ROLE:

The role of the online English facilitator is to help participants to build confidence in their English language skills.

Participants are adult migrants from 18 to 65 of age, from a Spanish/Portuguese background. It is an opportunity to develop leadership, presentation, and facilitation skills.

To participate as an English facilitator volunteer, you should have an Australian background to help students be more familiar with the Aussie accent and to help them understand Australian idioms, however, native English speakers from different countries are welcome.

LLAMA has a flexible schedule; you can join one class per week (an hour and a half weekly volunteer commitment) or as many sessions as you want. You can choose the student level you feel most comfortable with.

  • Engage with participants to build their English language skills through the use of pictures, simple texts, games, and different online resources using Zoom.
  • Develop curriculum and class materials based on needs, abilities, and interests of participants in consultation with English Program Volunteer Coordinator.
  • Correct student mistakes either writing the correct answer via Zoom chat, or verbally.
  • Share experiences and expressions that are common in Australian culture.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participate in LLAMA meetings and Zoom app training.
  • Provide the English Program Volunteer Coordinator a small comment about each session (number of participants, topic discussed, resources used) for Foundation report purposes.
  • Provide advice / feedback to the English Program Volunteer Coordinator regarding the English sessions.
  • Use the Slack app to communicate with the English Program volunteer members.
  • Encourage students to move on to the next level up when they reach the right level of English.
  • Provide their availability 4 weeks in advance.
  • Report concerns, needs or incidents to the English Program coordinator volunteer.
  • Notify the English Program Volunteer Coordinator at least 48 hours before the session when a situation comes up and you are not available for the session.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Have good literacy skills.
  • Be patient and friendly.
  • Have an Australian or English-speaking background.
  • Be interested in working with people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
  • Have good interpersonal and communication skills.
