About the role

Join our Hurstville team as a Supporter of Carers in our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander team on a full time 6 month contract basis. The purpose of the Support of Carers role is to recruit, assess, train and support primary and respite for Foster Carers to ensure all children and young people in Life Without Barriers care receive appropriate and quality care services in a safe and supportive environment. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development, delivery and evaluation of Carer recruitment strategies and campaigns appropriate for the local area.
  • Ensure training plans are in place for Foster Carers and identify training needs as they arise for Carers.
  • Coordinate and/or deliver of training to foster Carers, including initial induction as well as ongoing and mandatory training for Foster Carers as determined by LWB, funding body requirements and relevant State legislation.
  • Conduct registration assessments of potential Foster Carers using an industry standard Carer assessment tool and in line with Life Without Barrier Policies and Procedures and State legislation.
  • Provide ongoing therapeutic support and supervision to Foster Carers in relation to their caring for children and young people in their home.

Skills & Experience

  • Certificate IV in Training and Assessment
  • Aboriginality and extensive knowledge of the needs of Aboriginal children, young people their families and/or carers
  • Demonstrated skills or experience in recruitment and/or marketing
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience related to child protection and/or out of home care.

  • Life Without Barriers considers that being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent is a genuine occupational requirement as outlined in section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act (1991) and permitted as a 'special measure' under section 8 of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth) and by articles 1(4) and 2(2) of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.  
  • You will be required to provide contact details for a cultural referee who can comment on your knowledge of issues impacting on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities in contemporary society and your ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The cultural referee must identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person.  
  • You may be requested to provide confirmation that you are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.

Successful candidates will be required to clear probity checks including National Criminal History Record Check and Working with Children Check (where relevant to the role).
