Veterinarians x2 - North Melbourne

The Lost Dogs' Home
  • Full-time

The Lost Dogs' Home is proud to be Australia's largest animal shelter, helping thousands of lost and abandoned animals each year. We are a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to providing outstanding veterinary care to animals who find their way to us.

In the shelter, we provide veterinary treatment and care for animals as we prepare them for life with a new family. This means you will have the opportunity to perform complex workups on shelter patients, collaborate with a veterinary behaviour team, undertake surgery and have the opportunity for further development in the unique area of shelter medicine. In addition to caring for the animals in the shelter, you will have the opportunity to treat privately owned pets, with the team at our Frank Samways Veterinary Clinic which runs as a separate commercial entity.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing high quality medical work up, treatment and surgery to shelter animals and occasional medical consultation and surgery in the private clinic
  • Providing guidance and mentorship within the vet team
  • Contributing to effective communication within the team, including feedback at regular meetings, daily staff communication and problem solving
  • Willingness to participate in research and engagement activities to support the Home, our community and our animals

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • 3+ years of previous experience as a veterinarian
  • Well-developed soft tissue surgical skills (orthopaedic surgery skills are a bonus and much welcomed!)
  • The ability to work cooperatively as a member of a large team including assisting at our Cranbourne shelter if needed
  • Sound emotional maturity and animal welfare ethics
  • Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to delegate tasks effectively
  • Flexibility to work a rotating roster, including some weekends

What we can offer you:

  • Fantastic career development, the challenge of shelter work and extensive opportunities to develop skills in animal welfare and shelter medicine
  • A diverse role with exposure to many different elements of veterinary medicine and surgery
  • Excellent remuneration, including support and financial assistance for approved studies and developmental activities
  • Access to our Employee Assistance Program
