The Law Council of Australia (Law Council) is the peak national representative body of the Australian legal profession. Since 1933 the Law Council has represented its Constituent Bodies, which include State and Territory law societies and bar associations, to speak on national issues, and promote the administration of justice, access to justice and general improvement of the law.
The Law Council engages in advocacy and policy development in relation to human rights, migration and equality before the law issues on behalf of the Australian legal profession. The Law Council campaigns on behalf of the profession on important issues. The Law Council’s human rights principles and commitments are directed to: the domestic implementation of international human rights in Australia; advocacy in relation to human rights in Australia and internationally; education and public awareness in relation to human rights; and participation in the international human rights system.
The Senior Policy Lawyer is a member of the Law Council’s Legal Policy Division. The position reports to the Deputy Director of Policy and is primarily responsible for the preparation of papers and submissions on human rights, migration and equality before the law. The position will also be required to work closely with the Law Council’s advisory committees, working groups, sections and Constituent Bodies.
Appropriate tertiary qualifications in law is required.
