The Katherine Women’s Crisis Centre is passionate and focused, working to support and maximise the safety of women and their children experiencing domestic, family and sexual violence in the greater Katherine region.

As a Children’s Counsellor you will be required to provide individual counselling for children who have witnessed family violence and provide counselling support, working in partnership with families to enhance the safety of all family members and support the best possible conditions for child development, safety and stability.

KWCC team consistently work together, to create an environment conducive to healing. Adhering to a strong organisational Vision, Mission and Core KWCC Values, you will be Networking and collaborating with services to ensure an integrated service response to children and families in the program.

You will need to be holistic, flexible and have a depth of cultural understanding and sound knowledge of domestic/family violence and its effects on children to conduct assessments to determine individual counselling, family and group work needs.

Affective communication skills are paramount as you engage extensively with other key community organisations, family violence, children’s and family services.

A successful applicant will posses:

  • A tertiary qualification in Social Work or related social and community services discipline (family therapy, play or art/ music therapy)
  • Direct service experience and expertise in counselling children who have witnessed domestic violence and/or trauma
  • Experience in initiating and delivering highly effective group work
  • Experience in conducting assessments, writing high level case notes and preparing reports
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the impact of family violence on children including neurological and psychosocial development
  • Demonstrated understanding of the gendered nature of violence against women and its impact on children and the diversity and experience of family violence
  • Knowledge of all aspects of Domestic and Family Violence
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuing professional education of self and others
  • Proven knowledge of cultural and cross-cultural issues affecting people accessing services and the ability to apply this knowledge when working with children and their families
  • To have current and satisfactory:
    • Criminal History Check
    • Ochre card – Working with Children Clearance
    • Knowledge of relevant legislative requirements - Mandatory Reporting of DV/Child protection
    • Current Drivers Licence
