  • Who: Volunteers to support Primary School aged children in our Kororoit Creek Neighbourhood House (KCNH) Homework Club.
  • When: Tuesdays between 3:30pm - 5:15pm (during Victorian school terms).
  • Where: Kororoit Creek Neighbourhood House 61A Selwyn Street, Albion, 3020.
  • Requirements: No experience required. Working with Children’s Check and Police Check arranged by KCNH.

about us

The KCNH homework club provides inclusive, engaging learning opportunities to primary school students from the Albion and Ardeer areas. It is a safe and inclusive environment which supports students from migrant, refugee or socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds to develop their confidence, build a love of learning and to support them with their homework. Our volunteers are passionate and committed, enabling students to build trusting relationships and a good support network, where learning can thrive!

This is a great opportunity for retirees, people returning to the work force or people who are studying or have studied Education, Special Education or Social and Community work.

We are looking for people who have:

  • A passion for working with children and giving back to their community
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills
  • An ability to build rapport with people from a range of backgrounds and cultures
  • The ability to commit to 2 hrs p/w for at least 2 school terms
  • An interest in joining a fun supportive, like-minded team of volunteers who make a real difference in the lives of children

As a volunteer you will be able to:

  • Read with students and support them to develop their love of books
  • Support students to complete their homework
  • Join in and support students in fun group lessons which explore cooking, teamwork, gardening, science experiments, the arts and sport.
  • Engage with students from a range of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds to develop their language and social skills in a fun environment
  • Provide direction, support and guidance to the students where needed

We're looking for volunteers with the following skills, experience and attributes:

  • Understanding and valuing of diversity
  • Willingness and capacity to work as part of a team
  • Good communication skills and competency in English
  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability and willingness to relate to young people and their families in a community and educational setting.
  • A passion in working with communities.
  • A commitment to the idea that all people, particularly children and youth, have the right to be provided with opportunities that enable them to flourish and reach their full potential.
  • Ability to work enthusiastically as part of a team but also take initiative in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent organisational skills

The following are desirable but not essential:

  • Skills or experience in teaching English as a Second Language
  • Experience teaching or tutoring year 3-6 students

As a volunteer you will:

  • Help create a fun, positive and safe environment for the students attending our programs.
  • Support young people to reach their full potential through educational tutoring and mentoring.
  • Help with the set up and pack up of the program including arranging afternoon tea.
  • Be willing to assist in the facilitation of the daily program, running educational activities for the young people attending homework club.

Training and Support

  • Attend an initial induction and any ongoing training that is made available by Kororoit Creek Neighbourhood House or other organisations.
  • Tutors will be supervised and supported by the Kororoit Creek Neighbourhood House Homework Club Coordinator.
