KALACC is the Kimberley Region’s Peak Indigenous Law and Culture organisation, operating under a strong cultural governance structure.

KALACC is looking for a strong and motivated woman to join our team as the Women’s Program Coordinator. This is a dynamic role that will work across the Kimberley region to facilitate programs that support Kimberley Aboriginal women to maintain and celebrate language, law and culture.

The KALACC women’s co-ordinator position will grow the reach of KALACC women’s program activities and support Aboriginal women across the region. This position will work closely with the KALACC Women’s board of directors and women’s team to facilitate the action plan for the Kimberley Aboriginal Women’s Strategic Plan for Language Law and Culture (KAWSP).

This is an Aboriginal identified position for a woman with experience and connections in the Kimberley.

KALACC is the Kimberley Region’s Peak Indigenous Law and Culture Centre.

Based in Fitzroy Crossing, we support the traditional cultural practices of the 30 language groups of the Kimberley Region. Incorporated in 1985, KALACC has a proud history of advocating for culturally based self – determination for the Kimberley.

Supporting the 30 Aboriginal language groups of the Kimberley is our cultural maintenance mission. KALACC encourages the participation of these groups in song, story and dance, as they keep their culture strong through sharing their knowledge with people through performance and through cultural practices.

KALACC’s core purpose is to assist and promote the ceremonies, songs and dance of Kimberley Aboriginal people, to encourage and strengthen their social, cultural and legal values and ensure their traditions a place in Australian society.

KALACC Women’s Program

The KALACC Women’s program purpose is to ensure that every Aboriginal woman in the Kimberley can practise, maintain, teach, and celebrate their language, law and culture on country and actively pass on their knowledge to the next generation of future cultural practitioners and leaders.

Our vision is to see Kimberley Aboriginal Women united and empowered to lead and engage with tehri families and communities in language, law, and culture for a positive and healthy future.

The KALACC women’s co-ordinator position has been created as a key role to grow the reach of KALACC women’s program activities and support Aboriginal women across the region through the implementation of the Kimberley Aboriginal Women’s Strategic Plan for Language Law and Culture (KAWSP). The KAWSP is informed by Aboriginal women from across the Kimberley, it outlines the shared goals and actions needed to achieve them. It acts on the calls from Kimberley women to develop place-based plans that targets their specific concerns around language, law and culture now and into the future.

KALACC’s women’s program plan and goals is build on the foundations of strong partnership with key organisations in the Kimberley. The Kimberley women’s program aligns with the strategic goals of key regional partner organisations including Kimberley Land Council (KLC), Kimberley Language Resource Centre (KLRC) and Aarnja.

Primary Objective

Under the direction of the KALACC Women’s Board of Directors, facilitate the implementation of the Kimberley Aboriginal Women’s Strategic Plan for Language, Law and Culture (KAWSP) actions. The position will take guidance from the KALACC Board and women’s team around cultural protocols and ensure cultural safety when engaging with the communities from the six cultural blocs of the Kimberley to support the ongoing maintenance, practise and celebration of Kimberley Language, law and culture.

With the KALACC women’s team, engage with Kimberley women’s leaders, organisations and community-based initiatives that align/complement KALACC’s programs. Maintain community stakeholder relationships and communicate between Kimberley organisations and the KALACC management team to ensure women’s program activities align and connect with broader KALACC programs.

KALACC is a dynamic flexible and unique organisation. KALACC responds to local community needs and requirements, working under strong cultural governance structure.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • Facilitate the roll out of the Kimberley Aboriginal Women’s Strategic Plan for Language, Law and Culture (KAWSP), develop an annual action plan and activities.
  • Work closely with the guidance of the KALACC women’s board and engage with board members in the roll out of activities and planned events.
  • Co-ordinate an annual camp for Kimberley Aboriginal Women to engage in their language law and culture.
  • Co-ordinate a calendar of events for the Kimberley region that engages women and organisations to share their events and connect.
  • Engage with community leaders, youth, and elders from Indigenous communities around the Kimberley region in the facilitation of the KAWSP and KALACC activities.
  • Engage and maintain positive relations with organisations that advance the interests of Aboriginal women and girls in the Kimberley.
  • Facilitate the development of individual community plans and activities that support women to engage in their language law and culture.
  • Develop secure spaces and management systems in line with KALACC systems for women’s sacred materials, imagery and documentation and equipment.
  • Negotiate with appropriate government and funding partners and maintain positive engagement with all government stakeholders.
  • Assisting with grant writing, reporting, fundraising and acquittal processes.
  • Ongoing sourcing of appropriate/diverse funding streams and fundraising activities for the KALACC Women’s Program.
  • Manage the budget for the KALACC women’s program.

KALACC organisational Responsibilities and Program Connections.

  • Liaise with the broader KALACC staff team and projects, connecting and aligning women’s program activities.
  • Engage in KALACC events, undertake, and support additional KALACC programs and activities where required and directed by KALACC management.
