Are you an experienced campaigner and advocate? Are you passionate about reducing the numbers of people incarcerated across Australia and excited about implementing the advocacy strategy of the Justice Reform Initiative? Do you have exceptional local jurisdictional knowledge of the justice and political systems in your state or territory? The Justice Reform Initiative is looking for a team of dedicated campaign and advocacy managers who are passionate about bringing about justice system change.
The Justice Reform Initiative is a new national justice advocacy organisation working to reduce over-incarceration in Australia and promote a community in which disadvantage is no longer met with a default criminal justice system response. The Justice Reform Initiative currently has a network of over 100 eminent Australians as patrons, including two former Governors-General, former High Court judges, former parliamentarians from all sides of politics and many other established community leaders. We also have strong support and partnerships with organisations and stakeholders around Australia who are all working to reduce incarceration. We are excited to start building our employee team in order to achieve our goal of reducing the numbers of people in prison by 50% by 2030. The advocacy and campaign managers will work directly with the Executive Director to implement the strategic plan and drive reform in each of the states and territories.
- Coordinating political strategy and ongoing political engagement in all the states and territories (this will include coordinating events in your jurisdiction’s Parliament, coordinating political delegations, developing parliamentary network groups, and retaining relationships with political staff and advisors)
- Overseeing outward facing public campaign work (including public speaking, public events, and media engagement).
- Prioritising campaign focuses in each jurisdiction and building partnerships with key stakeholders in each jurisdiction to build new campaigns and elevate and support the aligned campaigns of other advocates
- Stakeholder engagement: Building communities for justice reform in each jurisdiction; working to support existing advocacy and reform bodies; increasing the numbers of organisations and stakeholders working for change (including building relationships with stakeholders and organisations that are not currently connected with this work)
- Building and supporting the JRI supporter base in each local jurisdiction (working to increase supporters, retain supporter engagement and bring supporters together locally to build the capacity of the campaign)
- Coordinating the work of the relevant state/territory patrons (including assisting to set up political and government meetings) and coordinating patron meetings in each jurisdiction
- Working as required with the Executive Director and other JRI staff to provide jurisdictional expertise on a range of campaign, advocacy and strategy matters
Knowledge, Skills and Experience (Selection Criteria)
- Experienced campaigner and advocate: Demonstrated ability to implement focused campaigns to achieve concrete and measurable outcomes. Experience in a range of campaigning and communication tools, including grass roots and online mobilisation.
- High level critical understanding of the criminal justice system in Australia: Experience (preferably more than three years) working in justice advocacy or adjacent/related areas. A deep understanding of the failures of incarceration, and a thoughtful approach to strategic change in this space
- High level understanding of parliamentary and political processes: Experience in political lobbying, advocacy, and campaigning; understanding of the importance of a cross-party approach to political work in this space; demonstrated ability to maintain strong cross-party relationships
- High Level Communication Skills: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills alongside the ability to listen thoughtfully, summarise and thematise complex information in a range of different setting.
- Excellent Interpersonal Skills: The ability to relate to people from a diverse range of social and cultural backgrounds, and maintain professional, positive and warm relationships with staff and stakeholders.
- Demonstrated organisation and time-management skills: The ability to manage and prioritise competing demands (including working on short term urgent projects, alongside medium and longer-term projects). The ability to respond thoughtfully to multiple and competing demands, prioritise work, and manage multiple projects across multiple jurisdictions.
- Motivated and independent: The ability to work in a small team, with minimal supervision, and a high degree of autonomy, confidence, and independence.
- Integrity: Demonstrated experience working in environments which have required a high degree of integrity, judgement, confidentiality, sensitivity and thoughtfulness.
- Qualifications and Experience: At least three years experience working in a campaign, advocacy or associated role
- The unrestricted right to work in Australia
