RSPCA Australia is seeking to appoint an outstanding Chief Science Officer (CSO) to provide visionary leadership and deliver high-quality evidence-based information, advice, and comment on animal welfare policy issues across Australia. The position represents RSPCA Australia on relevant national committees and working groups involved in the setting of animal welfare legislation, strategies and related plans.

Reporting to the CEO, the CSO is a valued member of the Senior Management Team and has substantial input into the development of RSPCA Australia’s Strategic Priorities and Operational Plan. The role participates in the development and evaluation of issues-based advocacy and oversees the RSPCA Australia Knowledgebase. Together with the team, the position also contributes to preparing submissions to government and external organisations, reviewing RSPCA Australia policies and position papers through the Animal Welfare Policy Review Committee, and developing and reviewing farm animal welfare standards for the RSPCA Australia Approved Farming Scheme.

This is a high-profile role within the animal welfare sector in Australia and beyond. Fostering collaborative relationships with government, industry and RSPCA member societies to promote RSPCA Australia policies through the use of science, the CSO will be considered a thought leader in advocating for animal welfare. With demonstrated leadership in the areas of research and policy, which supports the fundamental evidence-based approach to the work of the RSPCA, the successful candidate will have a proven track record in reviewing scientific literature and preparing evidence-based information. They will also need the ability to represent the organisation as a trusted voice, and capacity to critically analyse and contribute to academic research. The appointee will have exceptional communication skills, including the ability to engage successfully with industry, all levels of government and the media.

The successful candidate will bring in-depth technical knowledge and relevant tertiary qualifications as well as outstanding interpersonal skills. The role is based in Canberra and is responsible for leading a small, multidisciplinary and geographically dispersed team. Occasional interstate travel will be required.
