Director, Global Policy - Flexible location / Remote

JDRF Australia
  • Location flexible (Australia or US west coast preferred)

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is spreading rapidly, cannot be cured and has already become one of the most dangerous chronic conditions on the planet. That’s the bad news. The good news is that it can be treated effectively and economically, so long as we put the right information and tools in the right hands.

Our global team is a new, startup-like group focused on doing exactly that - winning back day after day of life from the clutches of T1D by equipping advocates and policy-makers around the world with the best information. It’s a part of JDRF International, a T1D-focused non-profit and one of the largest funders of T1D research.

We’re looking for a policy director to join us. Why?

Making the argument. Our data shows the burden of T1D is greater and more urgent than we thought - but also that there are some absolute no-brainers in terms of policy responses. We want someone who can help us refine and articulate that argument in a series of short perspectives.

Holding up a mirror. Accountability is a powerful force. We want to create that for world leaders and the global T1D community by looking at how action compares with need. Where are the gaps? Who’s not pulling their weight? Who needs to know this stuff and how do we reach them?

Building advocacy tools. There are some arguments, and some mirrors, that will be useful in country after country around the world. Where that’s the case we want to build and share “starter packs” with the passionate, self-starting advocates who are out there on the front lines.

Your typical month probably includes interviewing clinic workers in Africa, helping a diabetes group develop a billion-dollar policy submission, drafting key sections for a forthcoming report and talking about what the ideal sandwich tastes like on the team chat.

What we’re looking for

  • Public policy masters degree (say MPP or similar) with 2-3 years experience
  • Strategic nous and judgement
  • Curious and able to learn technical and scientific information quickly; background in healthcare policy essential, and in diabetes or NCDs an advantage
  • Good writer and speaker, with a simple language style
  • Entrepreneurial and collaborative style, self-starter that requires little supervision
  • Comfort working remotely and across multiple time zones (we’re a global team)
  • Limited travel may be required

What we’re like

  • Social startup incubated by JDRF (a medical research charity)
  • Global team, but most of us are in US and Australia
