About Us?

The Institute for Urban Indigenous Health (IUIH) leads the development, planning and deliver of comprehensive primary health care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in South East Queensland. 

The Family Health and Wellbeing team is responsible for supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families in South East Queensland with the following services: Social Health, Birthing and Early Childhood Services (BiOC and ANFPP), Early Childhood Education (Deadly Kindies), Family Wellbeing, Paediatric Occupational and Speech Pathology.

About the Role?

As a Social Worker within the Birthing in Our Community (BiOC) North team you will be responsible for the delivery of efficient and effective human services to women and their families. This position plays a key role in our multi-disciplinary approach to health care services, with the goal of improving outcomes for families. 

  • Provide culturally appropriate human services for women, children and their families, which includes psychosocial assessments, interventions and family focused support.
  • Provide culturally appropriate assessment, counselling, advocacy, support and referrals to both internal and external services.
  • Apply high level clinical decision-making skills, utilising evidence-based practice to contribute to multidisciplinary complex case management.
  • Knowledge of the impact of trauma (inter-generational and intra-generational) on child and family functioning and the ability to provide a therapeutic response.
  • Apply specialist skills that restores and reaffirms pride in the cultural identity of women and their families.
  • Understanding of both protective factors and challenges facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families in South East Queensland.
  • Use trauma informed and strengths-based approaches to create a safe, supportive environment for womenand their families to grow healthy and strong in mind, body and spirit.
  • Provide support and advocacy for families involved with the Department of Child Safety with the aim to strengthen families, so children can remain with their families.
  • Encourage and promote an integrated, multidisciplinary team-based approach to delivery of services.

About You?

  • Relevant degree in Social Work or Behavioural Sciences
  • Knowledge of current child protection legislation and policy reforms
  • Current C Class Drivers Licence (QLD)
  • Current Blue Card (must have prior to commencement)
  • Current CPR & First Aid Certificate
  • Current Criminal History Check
  • Minimum three (3) years working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families
  • Must be up to date with COVID-19 vaccinations, including booster vaccinations, according to ATAGI Standards, prior to commencement
