We are looking for a suitably qualified/experienced person to join the Inner Sydney Voice team as a part time Communications Officer from our office in Waterloo.

The role will:

  • Promote the profile of ISV, its projects, and services through the production of quality print and electronic publications and social media
  • Produce four issues of Inner Sydney Voice Magazine per year
  • Provide communications support to the community campaigns and projects of the ISV as needed.

SALARY and CONDITIONS:

Salary rate is directed by the industry’s Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry (SCHADS) Award and is currently classified at Level 5 Pay point 1. Hourly rate is currently $40.56. The position is being offered Minimum of 14 hours per week, up to 21 hours for a candidate with experience in social media and website management.

This position may require occasional evening and weekend work including around publication date and flexible hours and Time in Lieu can be used to balance the fluctuating workload in consultation with the Executive Officer.

Additional paid hours may be offered by the Executive Officer for particular additional tasks, subject to available funds, which are paid on an hourly basis.

Employment conditions and policies are set out in the ISV Enterprise Agreement, the relevant award (the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry (SCHCADS) Award (or its equivalent) and ISV policies and procedures.

Organisational Context:

The successful applicant will be employed by Inner Sydney Regional Council for Social Development Inc. (trading as Inner Sydney Voice). Inner Sydney Voice (ISV) is a Not-for-Profit, Sector and Community Development Organisation whose principal purpose is to work with organisations and residents that work in the Sydney region to alleviate poverty, marginalisation and distress suffered by economically and socially disadvantaged communities.

ISV aims to achieve this purpose by:

  • Building the capacity of service providers to work together on issues affecting disadvantaged communities
  • Enhancing the level of engagement of vulnerable and disadvantaged communities
  • Strengthen the voices of disadvantaged communities by representing their views
  • Provide information and resources on community projects, programs and networks assisting disadvantaged communities and vulnerable groups

SELECTION CRITERIA:

Essential criteria:

  • Experience in sourcing articles, researching and writing articles
  • Ability to take responsibility for the timely completion of a project
  • Excellent written and spoken skills
  • The ability to make complex issues understandable to everyday people
  • Capacity to work in a community organisation environment
  • Capacity to identify social issues impacting on disadvantaged people and communities.
  • Capacity to identify social and community services issues in Inner and Eastern Sydney
  • Capacity to work with minimal supervision
  • Organisational experience with print, online and social media

Desirable criteria

  • Knowledge of social justice, community development and community services issues generally and particularly in Inner Sydney and Eastern Sydney
  • Experience in supporting and advocating for disadvantaged people and communities
  • Capacity to organise specialised information into a variety of formats including web content, social media content, and other community information and campaigning tools
  • Experience designing and managing websites
  • Experience developing or implementing tools for community campaigns

Indicative Statement of Duties:

Key Activity 1. Production of ISV’s quarterly publication – Inner Sydney Voice Magazine

  • Planning publication’s content and time frame in conjunction with Executive Officer who has editing responsibility and an editorial advisory group when established
  • Being primarily responsible for obtaining content for 28 page editions including
    • Commissioning articles for the quarterly magazine
    • Commissioning experts in chosen topics to write articles
    • Researching and writing articles, especially from ISV area of coverage
    • Sourcing articles for reprint from the internet and community sector publications
    • Taking photos to illustrate the content as required
  • Editing throughout the process, in liaison with authors, articles for readability and length
  • Producing a flat plan setting out placement of articles in preparation for layout as well as content page descriptions and front page text
  • Supply all material to the designer – the designer has a photo / graphic library
  • Work with the designer and ISV staff to determine the cover design
  • Co-ordinate Proofreading and corrections to the designer to ensure a good quality
  • Liaising with the designer and printer to ensure a satisfactory print job
  • Placing magazine content onto the ISV website and promoting it via social media and email
  • Liaising with ISV staff re timing for bulk mail out and distribution to their meetings
  • Reporting to Executive Officer of ISV if there are any delays of difficulties in completing the above tasks and working with the Executive Officer to find remedies to ensure acceptable quality editions are distributed at the designated time

Key Activity 2. Information and promotion:

  • Ensure the ISV website content is updated and the website is used as an effective communications channel for the organisation
  • Maintain social media channels and use them to promote the organisations and its activities
  • Work to ensure an integrated corporate brand presentation and communications strategy across ISV projects
  • Assist in the review and development of communication, social media and other related policies
  • Prepare produce and publicise promotional material for ISV and its projects such as Pamphlets, Training material and Reports
  • Work with TEI worker to assist in any communications training for the sector and staff
  • Work with staff and board on any campaigns supported by ISV

Where individual pieces of work require substantial additional hours over a short period of time, additional paid hours may be offered for this task subject to available funds. A person with good IT skills may also be able to assist with ISV’s IT and PC maintenance as part of this role.

Key Activity 3. ISV Administration:

  • Contribute to other initiatives of the organisation
  • Write a regular staff report
  • Participate in and contribute to staff or other relevant meetings
  • Other reasonable duties as directed
  • Adhere to policies and procedures of ISV, including EEO policy and procedures
  • Act and consult with other employees and volunteers to ensure health, safety and welfare at work, provide and maintain safe places of work, equipment and systems of work under the WH&S Act 2011
  • Optionally, a person with good IT skills may also assist with IT and PC maintenance

Key Relationships:

This position has responsibility for achieving the goals of ISVs publication and communication objectives. The work is performed in the context of:

  • The ISV Board having overall responsibility for the organisation
  • The Executive Officer having responsibility for all ISV staff, including support and supervision as well as ensuring ISV achieves its goals and this project meets its contract
  • The position does not have responsibility for other staff
  • The position will consult other staff in relation to productions directly under the publication officer responsibility or and assist them with their publications where appropriate
  • The position will liaise with staff and or contractors with responsibility for design and print

This position will work closely with social housing tenants and other agencies. The position is required to communicate progress and issues to the Executive Officer and Board.
