The Reclaim Kosci campaign

Are you passionate about conservation and protecting our natural environment? Do you have strong experience in delivering high profile campaigns and political lobbying?

The fragile sub-alpine and alpine environment of Kosciuszko National Park is under threat from the hard hooves of thousands of horses. NSW is the only state that has legislated the protection of an introduced species in a national park, despite the mountain of scientific evidence that documents the destruction caused by feral horses to riparian zones, streams, native vegetation and wildlife habitats. We invite you to join a dynamic team that is determined to see the government implement a plan that effectively and humanely manages feral horses in Kosciuszko National Park.

The Invasive Species Council is now recruiting two experienced campaigners. Visit reclaimkosci.org.au for an overview of campaign progress and activities thus far.

About the role

The two campaigners will work together with other campaign team members to coordinate, lead and deliver the Reclaim Kosci campaign.

The roles will have a strong focus on lobbying, stakeholder engagement and media activities. The campaigners will inspire, engage and mobilise new audiences and existing supporters to make progress on addressing the impacts of feral horses in Kosciuszko National Park. The core focus of each campaigner will be negotiated dependent on the strengths demonstrated by the candidate.

The campaigners will work closely with other campaign staff. Direction will be provided by the Reclaim Kosci campaign steering committee.

About Reclaim Kosci

Reclaim Kosci is a broad coalition of organisations and people determined to protect and restore Kosciuszko National Park from the impacts of feral horses. It was formed in response to the passage of NSW legislation in June 2018 protecting feral horses in the national park.

Reclaim Kosci seeks:

  • To raise awareness about the impacts of feral horses in Kosciuszko National Park.
  • Repeal of the Kosciuszko Wild Horse Heritage Act 2018.
  • A substantial reduction in the feral horse population in Kosciuszko National Park through humane and effective means.

Kosciuszko National Park is for all Australians. It must be protected from feral horses and the damage restored. Reclaim Kosci aims to do just that!

About the Invasive Species Council

The Invasive Species Council is a non-government organisation that seeks better laws and policies to protect the Australian environment from weeds, feral animals, insects, pathogens and other invaders. Formed in 2002, we were the first environment group in the world to focus solely on invasive species.

The organisation’s focus is on prevention and early action. Our primary objective is to achieve improvements to state and federal laws, policies, institutions and activities to systematically lower the risk of new invasive species establishing in Australia.

Feral horses are an important emerging vertebrate pest in Australia that, if not contained and their extent and numbers reduced, will impact large areas of Australia.
