About the role

This role is a new role, created to reflect the growing expansion of the Civil Law Division, and increase in services to NDIS participants. The NDIS Appeals team provides representation, advice, and minor assistance to clients who are appealing decisions of the NDIA in the AAT. The team also provides information and referral to clients, carers, and disability advocates, as well as community legal education to the NDAP network.

The team leader will supervise the lawyers, paralegals and administrative staff who provide these services, drive stakeholder engagement, and manage budgets. The team leader will report to the Director of Civil Law.

About the Division

The Civil Law Division incorporates several services including Elder Rights WA, Defence and Veterans Legal Service, Your Story – Disability Royal Commission, self-represented litigants in the Federal Court, and services related to money, housing and work.

The Civil Law Division is predominantly based in the Perth office of Legal Aid WA.

About You

We are looking for a dynamic lawyer who can:

  • Lead the NDIS Appeals team, being a specialist team of staff and volunteers, including solicitors, paralegals, administrative staff, and law students, by providing supervision of legal work, and performance management.
  • Provide representation, legal advice, and minor assistance services at an advanced level on matters of complexity.
  • Plan and coordinate the team’s community legal education program, including liaising with external stakeholders.
  • Manage key stakeholder relationships including with Government agencies, funding agencies, and manage a budget.

Ideally, you would have:

  • Experience working with clients who have complex needs, and an understanding of the issues impacting our clients.
  • Considerable post admission experience in Civil Law
  • Experience in NDIS matters
  • Experience leading a team including supervising junior practitioners or paralegals

Essential Requirements

  • Admission or eligibility for admission as a legal practitioner in WA
  • Ability to provide a valid Practising Certificate upon commencement 
  • Willingness to undertake a National Police Check and/or Working with Children Check
