The Mental Health Advocacy Service

The Mental Health Advocacy Service (MHAS) is established by Part 20 of the Mental Health Act 2014 and assists people who are subject to involuntary mental health treatment orders or residents of psychiatric hostels to ensure their rights are protected. Advocacy Services Staff, including this position, support the Chief Mental Health Advocate to perform his or her functions under the Act. The Mental Health Advocacy Service is operationally independent of the Mental Health Commission which provides corporate support services and is the employing authority of Advocacy Services Staff.

Position Profile

MHAS is seeking to appoint a skilled and experienced Liaison Officer to provide reception and administrative support functions. The team of Liaison Officers are the first point of contact for the organisation and take calls from mental health consumers, Advocates and the public, and greet visitors. Liaison Officers also handle notification of involuntary treatment and other orders from hospitals via MHAS' database which are allocated to Advocates for follow up. The Liaison Officers are an integral part of the small MHAS office and provides other administrative support to Advocates across the State.

Conditions

Whilst this selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy, it may also be used to fill other "similar" vacancies. In addition to this, should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised vacancy, then the next most suitable applicant may also be selected from this process. Both of these options remain valid for a period of twelve (12) months from when the authorised delegate endorses the recruitment decision.

Staff are engaged in positions of trust and offers of appointment are subject to criminal record checks as per the Criminal Record Screening Policy. Candidates will also be asked to provide documents to prove their identity and that they are an Australian citizen or hold permanent residency.
