As an Aged Care Advocate, you will play a vital role in empowering older people to exercise their rights. By providing essential information, education, and unwavering support, you'll help them navigate their care journey with confidence.

Role responsibilities

As an Aged Care Advocate, your responsibilities will include:

  • Listening to and supporting older people who are receiving or seeking residential aged care services, as well as their representatives, to make informed decisions through telephone and face-to-face support
  • Advocating on behalf of clients in response to complaints against aged care service providers to have their concerns addressed
  • Advocating on behalf of older people receiving or seeking to receive residential aged care services to ensure their rights are upheld and responded to appropriately
  • Managing intake and advocacy cases using Salesforce database
  • Referring clients to other services including the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission
  • Providing education and information sessions to aged care recipients and aged care staff
  • Assisting in developing and maintaining appropriate information resources for clients
  • Participating in seniors’ events, information days, displays and exhibitions in the local area
  • Contributing to promotional campaigns targeting identified priority groups
  • Participating in the maintenance and development of local networks and relationships to promote Seniors Rights Service and expand its reach
  • Contributing to identification and monitoring of systemic issues arising for people receiving or seeking to receive aged care services and/or their representatives
  • Travelling interstate for work as required

Essential criteria:

  • Degree in Social Work, Psychology or a related field, or equivalent demonstrated experience gained through relevant professional practice
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of the aged care system in NSW and familiarity with community resources for additional support
  • Strong commitment to human rights, social justice and diversity
  • Experience engaging with people who have lived experience of trauma
  • Previous experience in applying advocacy that champions client voice and agency
  • Be willing to register and authenticate as an advocate agent for professional use of the My Aged Care online portal
  • Demonstrated experience in planning and delivering workshops and presentations
  • Good interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
  • Skills in negotiation, teamwork, conflict resolution, decision making and problem solving
  • Understanding of ageism and how it affects older people and their rights
  • Excellent computer skills, fluent in Microsoft Office 365 and database management
  • Willing to use your own registered and comprehensively insured vehicle, where you will be reimbursed for work related mileage claims
  • Willingness to obtain an annual flu vaccination and hold a valid National Criminal History check and NSW driver’s licence as a condition of employment
