SELECTION CRITERIA

Illawarra Legal Centre Inc (ILC) exists to support vulnerable and disadvantaged people to access free legal services and to recognise their legal rights.

ILC’s people are dedicated, driven, person focused and committed to the principles of social justice and human rights.

The Generalist Solicitor works in a team of solicitors to provide advice and casework services in targeted areas, as well as providing Community Legal Education and participating in policy and law reform activities.

Main responsibilities:

• Provide advice and information focused on resolving legal issues and increasing client capacity
• Provide casework support to vulnerable people requiring legal support
• Develop and deliver Community Legal Education about issues impacting people in the community
• Participate in law and policy reform
• Work effectively as part of the multidisciplinary team of ILC

Essential Criteria:

• An Australian unrestricted practising certificate
• Demonstrated understanding of the legal needs of disadvantaged groups
• Ability to work within a trauma informed and culturally aware framework with people from diverse backgrounds
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of the broader ILC team

• Exceptionally high level oral and written communication skills, including excellent grammar, proofreading, attention to detail and accuracy.
• Demonstrated capacity in developing and delivering Community Legal Education to Community members and networks.
• Commitment to access and equity principles and willingness to participate in policy and law reform activities

• Ability to undertake own administrative duties (e.g. word processing, file management) in accordance with policy and organisational requirements.
• Understanding of WHS requirements
• Competence in use of email/internet/and client management systems.
• Clear ability to juggle a number of assignments at a time, react quickly, prioritise tasks and organise a busy work load
• Excellent client service skills
• Commitment to the philosophy of Community Legal Centres
• A current driver’s license and access to a comprehensively insured reliable vehicle.

Desirable:

• Previous Community Legal Centre or other relevant community experience

Salary: As per ILC Enterprise Agreement, between $51.21 - $53.52 per hour (subject to experience). Salary Sacrifice is available to ILC employees.
