Lead Research Analyst - Australian Electricity

We are seeking an experienced Lead Research Analyst for Australian Electricity reporting to Tim Buckley, The Institute of Energy Economics and Financial analysis (IEEFA) Australasian Research Director in Sydney, Australia. This is a new position enabled by continued growth of the IEEFA.

The candidate will have a degree in Finance, Accounting or Energy Engineering and ideally an MBA (completed or finishing). In addition, significant finance and energy related industry experience where a clear track record of innovative and evidence-based research leading to impactful change will be highly regarded.

We value great attention to detail, and those who are self-directed and motivated will be a great fit for our small team. Strong communication, outreach skills and a passion for making a difference on climate change through evidence-based research will also be key. Industry standing and connections that enable high level engagement and collaboration with stakeholders working in policy, industry and finance are desirable.

About IEEFA

The Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) is a not for profit organisation that conducts research and analyses on financial and economic issues related to energy and the environment. We are an independent global energy finance think tank www.ieefa.org The Institute’s mission is to accelerate the transition to a diverse, sustainable and profitable energy economy.

Our dynamic Sydney based team works collaboratively with IEEFA’s eight international offices across different research areas including the coal, gas and electricity markets. While a base in Sydney would help on collaboration, working remotely is entirely feasible for the right candidate.

Position Purpose

The overall purpose of the role is to conduct and disseminate financial analysis relating to the Australian electricity generation sector and the global transition to renewable energy.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Researching, interpreting and publishing financial data on the energy sector
  • Financial analysis, modelling and electricity market analysis
  • Drafting reports, submissions and press releases
  • Engaging with stakeholders across government, regulators, industry and finance
  • Advising not-for-profit environmental organisations as a representative of IEEFA
  • Creating powerpoint presentations and speaking at industry conferences to drive engagement to deliver measurable results in the energy finance space
  • Building a media profile as an independent expert
  • Horizon scanning for energy and finance news through media articles, annual reports, investor presentations, industry reports on global electricity markets, coal, renewable energy and energy efficiency

Skills and Attributes

Essential

  • Demonstrated leadership experience in an energy or finance industry related role
  • Finance degree or similar with further study
  • Strong presentation, written and oral communication skills
  • Flexibility and high self-motivation
  • Integrity, hardworking with a positive, proactive attitude
  • Motivated by the need to provide evidence-based research to support climate change action - your work will assist IEEFA in its mission to accelerate the transition to a diverse, sustainable and profitable energy economy and have the biggest impact possible

You would like to use your industry acquired skills and professional standing to make a positive change through your work. You have the ability to leverage engagement, drive measurable results that deliver positive outcomes and advance the transition to renewables through exceptional financial modelling and research.

You are highly self-motivated and may work remotely as negotiated. You have a positive, enquiring attitude, a desire to learn, to teach and also to collaborate with others.

Renumeration by negotiation

Full Time/ Part Time (flexible by negotiation), 24 month contract with the option of extension by mutual agreement;

FTE salary range A$100k -A$115k + super, depending upon experience.
