Casual Police Station Support Workers deliver timely support to young people & adults with cognitive impairment when they are in NSW police custody, after hours & on weekends. A Casual Police Station Support Worker may be engaged between the hours of 5pm and 9am seven days a week. The minimum engagement is three (3) hours.

The Justice Advocacy Service (JAS) supports young people and adults with cognitive impairment in contact with the NSW criminal justice system, including as victims, witnesses and suspects/defendants to exercise their rights and fully participate in the process. JAS uses an individual advocacy approach by arranging a support person to be with victims, witnesses and suspects/defendants when they are in contact with police, courts and legal representatives.

JAS is delivered by the Intellectual Disability Rights Service (IDRS) and is available across NSW. IDRS is committed to the safety and well-being of every vulnerable person who engages with our services including children and young people.

We have positions available across NSW.

Remuneration

Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2010 (SCHADS)Level 2.4 (Casual rate).

Hours of duty

The frequency of engagement is dependent on demand. It is not possible to guarantee frequency of engagement.

Casual employees are not considered to be on-call.

Casual employees will be asked to indicate their availability for work on appointment.

A Casual Police Station Support Worker will perform their main duties at a police station.

Casual employees will be asked to nominate police stations that they would be willing and able to attend for this work.

Essential criteria

  • Demonstrated experience working in a flexible, person centred way with young people and/or adults with cognitive impairment or other social disadvantage
  • Demonstrated sound interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to break down complex ideas simply and clearly
  • Ability to communicate effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander people and communities
  • Proven ability to work independently with due regard for personal safety and the safety of others
  • Driver’s license.

Desirable criteria

  • Sound understanding of the operation of the criminal justice system
  • Relevant tertiary qualification including Human services degree, Certificate IV or Diploma (e.g. AOD, Community Services, Mental Health, Youth Work, Disability).
