ABOUT THE JUSTICE ADVOCACY SERVICE (JAS)

JAS is a free service that supports young people & adults with cognitive impairment to exercise their rights when in contact with the NSW criminal justice system. With the generous support of our Volunteers, JAS works with people with cognitive impairment arising from intellectual disability, borderline intellectual function, acquired brain injury, alcohol and drug-related brain injury (including foetal alcohol spectrum disorder), autism spectrum disorder, or dementia.

We walk alongside victims, witnesses, suspects & defendants in all stages of the criminal justice process

As a Justice Advocate you will be supporting and assisting young people and adults with cognitive impairment when they are involved with the criminal justice system as victims, suspects/defendants or witnesses.

  • 22.5 hours per week – 3 days per week
  • Salary range $80,751 - $84,680 pro rata plus 9.5% super + Not For Profit salary packaging benefits.

JUSTICE ADVOCATE ROLE - KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support person for people with cognitive impairment in interactions with police if the person has been arrested or wishes to make a statement to the police as a witness or victim of crime. This will involve some after-hours on-call work at police stations.
  • Support person for people with cognitive impairment at court, legal appointments or criminal justice-related conferences/mediations
  • Recruit, support and manage a network of local volunteer support persons
  • Advocacy to assist the person to resolve problems or issues impacting their criminal justice proceedings or outcome.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • Your application must explain how you meet the Essential skills and Experience listed.

    1. Demonstrated experience working in a flexible person-centred way with people with cognitive impairment or other social disadvantage
    2. Demonstrated ability to advocate effectively and persistently to achieve best outcomes for disadvantaged people
    3. Demonstrated experience using the Microsoft Office suite of products
    4. Understanding of systemic barriers for victims of crime and suspects/defendants with cognitive impairment when involved in the criminal justice system
    5. Ability to support, motivate and manage a network of local volunteer support persons
    6. Ability to communicate complex ideas simply and clearly
    7. Ability to work effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
    8. Proven ability to work independently and in a small team environment.

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE

A sound understanding of the operation of the criminal justice system would be an advantage.

The position involves some after-hours on-call work.
