Overview

Do you want to help break the cycle of intergenerational trauma and be a part of a passionate Aboriginal led organisation that helps reconnect kids to their culture and empower them to make positive choices? If so, we'd love to hear from you!

We are looking for an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander identifying Youth Mentor to be a part of our team. You would be providing 1-on-1 support to young Aboriginal people who are living in out-of-home care or who have been in contact with the juvenile justice system. You would also be helping facilitate our group sessions that run twice a week after school where we engage the kids in a number of activities like yarn time, art workshops, sport, cooking and more.

ID. Know Yourself is a non-for-profit that was Founded by Isaiah Dawe who has had first hand experience growing up in the foster system. We are a hands on, inclusive and passionate organisation full of people who are committed to creating real change. The aim is to fill the gaps for our young people by providing love, consistency and holistic support that gives young people living in out of home care the chance to establish belonging, purpose and empowerment.

THIS ROLE INVOLVES:

  • 1-on-1 youth mentoring, including support coordination, advocacy and face to face visits
  • Community engagement and program promotion
  • Engagement with carers, caseworkers and schools
  • Organisational participation
  • Facilitating workshops for children and young people

RESPONSIBILTIES INCLUDE:

  • Mentor young people, both one-on-one and in and group sessions
  • Establish, monitor, and support the achievement of goals for young people
  • Coordinate and facilitate recurring weekly meetings for young people
  • Help develop, coordinate, facilitate and attend group sessions for young people
  • Complete intake process for young people via referral pathways
  • Provide timely and accurate advice and information on our client's programs
  • Monitor the progress of our young people through face to face and non-face to face contact
  • Capture regular case notes on the young people you are working with
  • Build strong relationships with young people, support their emotional wellbeing, cultural identity, and connection with community
  • Provide age-appropriate advice and guidance to young people regarding health and wellbeing, education, life skills and work-readiness
  • Build and maintain links with young people’s community networks, including making connections with family
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with our stakeholders including Department of Community and Justice, Juvenile Justice, Koori Court, employment pathway partners, program delivery partners and volunteer network

You will have:

  • The passion and energy to support and help empower young people ages 7-19 years old.
  • Proven understanding and knowledge of Aboriginal peoples, their culture and communities
  • A demonstrated understanding of the issues facing Aboriginal communities and young people
  • Experience working with young people from vulnerable communities
  • Relevant qualifications and / or sector experience
  • Demonstrated initiative, ability to work autonomously exercising sound judgement
  • Up to date to Working with Children Check, national police check and first aid
  • A current NSW driver's license
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination
