Peer Support Worker

About the Role

ICLA provides empathetic care and support in a home-like environment to those who are experiencing mental health issues and the impacts of trauma with aim of fostering a sense of connectedness, hope and empowerment among the people we support. We are seeking compassionate and dedicated peer support workers who will utilise their own lived experience to supporting others in their mental health recovery journey.

If you are someone who can utilise their own lived experience as an instrument to demonstrate a compassionate level of understanding, then we want you!

The responsibilities of our Peer Support Workers include:

  • Establish an ongoing and trusting relationship with participants
  • Listen to people without judgement and acknowledge the unique experiences of each person
  • Ensure participants are the drivers of their own recovery journey and have choice and control
  • Ensure the health and wellbeing of our participants is respected and promoted
  • Assist people to identify their individual, recovery-orientated needs and goals
  • Assist people to identify and connect to support networks that will promote their connectedness and recovery
  • Working collaboratively with other ICLA staff to ensure best practice

Essential Criteria

Experience, Personal Attributes and Qualifications

  • A personal lived experience of mental health issues, trauma or suicidality
  • A commitment to providing compassionate, person-centred and recovery-oriented support
  • Ability and capacity to listen and acknowledge discussion of mental health, trauma and suicide in a compassionate, non-judgmental way
  • An ability to carry out the support work whilst understanding professional boundaries
  • Proficiency and confidence in interpersonal communication skills, with a dedication to build trust and rapport with guests
  • An unwavering commitment to follow and adhere to policies, procedures and frameworks that underpin and inform our services
  • Ability to work closely and collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team
  • A willingness to participate in mandatory staff training
  • Proficiency in both written and verbal communication
  • Basic working ability with MS Office suite including Outlook, Word and Excel
  • Ability to work remotely moving to office based post COVID-19
  • Comfortable carrying out video calls and able to provide a professional environment behind you during the video call.
  • Driver’s license
  • Police Check

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience as a Peer Worker
  • Experience in providing recovery-orientated psychosocial support to vulnerable populations (e.g., people with a disability; children or young people; the elderly)
  • Diploma, degree or equivalent in a related field (e.g., mental health, social work)
  • First Aid Certificate
