Hunter TAAS provides advice and advocacy services to tenants in the Hunter Region and is funded under the Tenants Advice and Advocacy Program administered by Fair Trading NSW.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The role is permanent part time; 28 hours per week.

Employment will be under SCHADS award Level 6, pro-rata

A Tenant Advocate provides information, advice and advocacy to renters on their rights and obligations. This can include telephone advice, face to face appointments, written advice and representation of clients in matters before the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal. The Advocate will also participate in community education initiatives and community events.

Selection Criteria

Essential Selection Criteria:

• Demonstrated skills in providing information, advice and advocacy for clients on their rights and responsibilities in a legal or non-legal setting,
• Demonstrated high level oral and written communication skills,
• Demonstrated experience in client/case management, advocacy, negotiation and representation,
• Demonstrated capacity to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines,
• An understanding of, and commitment to tenants rights, and social justice
• Ability to work independently and as a cooperative member of a team,
• Current driver’s license and a comprehensively insured vehicle

Desirable Criteria:

• Tertiary qualifications in a relevant field,
• An understanding of tenancy law in NSW,
• Experience in the research, review and interpretation of policy and legislation,
• Experience in representing clients in formal settings
• Ability to effectively undertake and deliver community education initiatives,
• Knowledge of referral pathways and
• Experience working with clients with complex needs
