The Human Rights Law Centre, a leading national human rights organisation, seeks a Campaigner. The position is a fixed-term contract to 30 June 2022 based in Melbourne, available to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander applicants.

This position is only open to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander applicants. The filling of this position is intended to constitute a special/equal opportunity measure under section 8(1) of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth) and section 12 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 (Vic).

About the role

This is an exciting new role which will advance Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ Rights campaigns including the national campaign to #RaiseTheAge of criminal responsibility and a potential new campaign to reform discriminatory bail laws in Victoria which cause too many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women to be needlessly locked up.

The role will work within the Public Engagement team and will work closely with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ rights team and the Government Relations Manager. Reporting to the Public Engagement Director, the Campaigner will:

  • Strategy: Contribute to the development of campaign strategic plans including by designing actions to build support for campaigns and generate momentum for change to achieve campaign objectives.
  • Produce content: Work with the Public Engagement team to produce, review and distribute high quality campaign content including campaign emails, petitions, social media and resources.
  • Supporter actions: Work with the Public Engagement team to implement campaign supporter actions including organising events.
  • Build relationships: Support engagement and building relationships with key stakeholders, including Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations, campaign ambassadors, politicians and the media;
  • Political engagement: Work with the Government Relations Manager to coordinate and track political engagement related to campaign objectives;
  • Media: Work with the Public Engagement team to identify newsworthy media pitches and achieve strategic media coverage;
  • Evaluation: Produce reports on campaign activities for evaluation.
  • Culture: Contribute to a strong team culture of impact, innovation, integrity, reflection, cohesiveness, communication, shared purpose and collaboration at the Human Rights Law Centre.

Conditions

  • The salary will be up to $79,549 plus 9.5% superannuation.
  • The position is a fixed-term contract to 30 June 2022 based in Melbourne with a possibility of extension subject to funding.
