The Office is looking to fill several existing and expected vacancies at the APS 6 level across various branches. We will develop a merit pool to fill any vacancies that arise in the 12 month period from the date of advertisement. We will work with successful candidates to match their skills, qualifications and experience to positions.

About the Office

The purpose of the Office of the Commonwealth Ombudsman (the Office) is to:

  • Provide assurance that the Australia Government entities and prescribed private sector organisations the Office oversights, act with integrity and treat people fairly, and
  • Influence enduring systematic improvement in public administration in Australia and the Pacific region.

The Office does this through handling complaints, conducting investigations, performing audits and inspections, encouraging good administration and discharging specialist oversight tasks. The Office also influences improvement in public administration in the Pacific region through collaboration with partner entities.

Duties

Duties are to be performed under the broad direction of your manager and in accordance with the APS Code of Conduct and APS Values, as well as upholding the Office values of independence, impartiality, integrity, accessibility and professionalism. In doing this you will support the Office through:

  1. Working with the Assistant Directors and Director, leading and supervising other staff to achieve quality outcomes, and supporting staff to develop their skills, capabilities and knowledge.
  2. Undertaking complex tasks, which may include investigations, inspections/audits or projects.
  3. Communicating effectively, including with internal and external stakeholders. This may include presenting at events and creating stakeholder engagement plans, submissions and briefings on complex issues.
  4. Delivering training and induction to new staff, leading and mentoring team members, and developing resources to help your team to perform its functions effectively.
  5. Working effectively with external stakeholders and representing the Office at forums and other corporate activities.
  6. Undertaking and managing projects under the direction of your manager.

Our ideal candidate

The successful candidate will have broad experience in customer service, complaint management, stakeholder engagement, regulation, integrity functions or project work, and have experience in supervising staff. Candidates should enjoy working in a small agency and in a geographically dispersed team environment.

You should have:

  • A sound understanding of the functions and goals of an integrity agency
  • Strong analytical skills and an ability to assess complex information and data
  • High level oral and written communication skills and ability to influence, negotiate strategic outcomes and manage stakeholder relationships
  • Experience in managing and supporting others to create a shared sense of team purpose, build capability and effectively manage change
  • Demonstrated professionalism and impartiality at all times.

Qualifications and/or work experience relating to administrative decision-making, audit/compliance inspections, investigations or project management will be highly regarded.
