About Us

The Tjiwarl Claimants are the native title holders (determined in May 2017) over approximately 13,800 square kilometres of land in the Northern Goldfields region of WA.

Tjiwarl (Aboriginal Corporation) was established to hold on trust the native title rights and interests of the Tjiwarl native title holders. The corporation is responsible for delivering core governance and operational activities, fulfils obligations under land use agreements, implements programs for the betterment of Tjiwarl native title holders, protects and preserves land and heritage for the Tjiwarl community.  

The Role

This position is responsible for leading the Tjiwarl Ranger Unit, and for undertaking strategic and operational planning in land management. The Tjiwarl Ranger Unit is supported and guided by Tjiwarl Elders, who act as an advisory group and provide strategic and cultural guidance to the program. A team of staff based in Perth supports this role.

This role facilitates the process to develop a Healthy Country Plan, establish relationships and partnerships and establishes policies and strategies, identifies and implements programs to protect the biodiversity, cultural, and economic resources of the Tjiwarl people. Some of the vital operational works plan activities include fire, feral, and weed management; fee for service projects; cultural tourism and mine activity engagements and monitoring. The Ranger Coordinator is required to prepare and oversee implementation of an annual project and activity plan and associated budgets.

This position supervises Rangers.

The Duties:

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Lead ranger unit field projects:

  • Coordinate and lead on-ground land management activities
  • Coordinate the preparation of work plans and internal budgets
  • Coordinate the scheduling, implementation, supervision, and reporting of Remote Ranger Teamwork plans and trips
  • Ensure grant and fee for service works are completed within agreed timeframes, to accepted standards and budget
  • Ensure appropriate workplace health and safety procedures are followed
  • Keep Goldfields based vehicles, equipment and premises secure and in good working order
  • Coordinate payment for Tjiwarl rangers and cultural advisers
  • Report regularly to the CEO on project activities

Provide leadership and management of the ranger team to undertake land management and other duties:

  • Coordinate, supervise and support the development of the Tjiwarl Ranger Team
  • Provide leadership, motivation, mentoring and developmental support to develop Rangers’ effectiveness, capacity and leadership skills in the workplace
  • Work closely with colleagues, Goldfields service providers, and partner organisations to assess training needs of Rangers, and deliver appropriate skills-based and on the job training
  • Lead recruitment and human resource activities (contract; performance reviews) of the Tjiwarl Ranger Team
  • Support ranger participation in workshops, presentations (Elders Meetings) and other initiatives which help build their skills and confidence, and provide opportunities to showcase the group’s achievements
  • Manage the Ranger budget
  • Assist the community to design and implement effective processes and structures that enable them to manage more of the land management program

Secure and build rangers unit financial resources through improved grant acquisition and fee for service projects:

  • Actively support pre-positioning efforts for grant and fee for service projects
  • Support the process of designing high-quality and innovative concepts, program designs, proposals and tender applications

Participate as a member of the tjiwarl ac leadership team:

  • Work closely with the CEO to troubleshoot problems and provide comprehensive feedback to the Elders, Board and community
  • Assist in advocacy for and promotion of the Tjiwarl land management program
  • Contribute to development of other land management projects and opportunities
  • Represent Tjiwarl Ranger Unit at strategic meetings in the Goldfields and elsewhere
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures
  • Be the Officer in Charge for the Ranger Unit
  • Participate in performance reviews and professional development
  • Other duties as directed by the CEO

Selection Criteria

Essential:

  • Experience in Indigenous land management work; or strong logistical, community development and practical skills relevant to ranger/land management activities
  • Experience in training, development and management of Indigenous ranger teams
  • Collaborate and work effectively with Aboriginal people and stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to innovate and find practical solutions
  • Use appropriate initiative and work productively with limited supervision in sometimes complex and remote situations
  • Work in a regional location and undertake extended fieldwork in remote areas of the Goldfields region
  • High-level organisational skills and ability to consistently follow-through on tasks promptly
  • Well-developed written and oral communications skills
  • Competence in the use of computers and Microsoft Office applications
  • Current manual driver’s license and competence in the use of a manual 4WD vehicle in remote and off-road conditions
  • Able to obtain a current Police Clearance
  • C Class License

Desirable:

  • Mapping and geographic information system (GIS) skills
  • Qualifications and experience in natural resource management, environmental science, training & assessment, anthropology, or community development.
  • Project management experience.
  • Experience working in the Native Title Sector. 

Salary & Benefits

Initially offered up to a two year contract with possible extension.

A competitive salary will be negotiated based on skills and experience and will include 6 weeks annual leave.

The role is based in Leinster and travel will be required to Perth from time to time.
