About Us

The Tjiwarl Claimants are the native title holders (determined in May 2017) over approximately 13,800 square kilometres of land in the Northern Goldfields region of WA.

Tjiwarl (Aboriginal Corporation) was established to hold on trust the native title rights and interests of the Tjiwarl native title holders. The corporation is responsible for delivering core governance and operational activities, fulfils obligations under land use agreements, implements programs for the betterment of Tjiwarl native title holders, protects and preserves land and heritage for the Tjiwarl community.  

The Role

The primary objective of this position is to:

  1. Coordinate and facilitate engagement of all stakeholders on cultural and heritage matters across Tjiwarl country and across projects
  2. Be the central conduit to communicating with Mining Companies, Tjiwarl people with cultural authority and Tjiwarl Heritage Officers (the latter are casual Tjiwarl who determine who goes on surveys, monitoring) regarding proposed/planned surveys, monitoring and site visits

This position contributes to the strategic development, planning and management of the objects, vision and direction of TJIWARL and provides advice to the CEO and Board within its areas of accountability. Ideally the successful applicant will live in Leinster where there is an existing office.

The Duties:

  • Contributes to the strategic development and management of the objects, vision and direction of TJIWARL
  • Strategic advice and guidance to the CEO and Board on Native Title and Cultural matters
  • As required by the CEO, attend governance and compliance meetings and committees, including General Meetings, Annual General Meetings, Cultural meetings and other key strategic committees and meetings
  • Advise on cultural and heritage matters in key programs and projects that support and meet the strategic priorities and objectives of TJIWARL
  • Report regularly to the CEO and Board on Culture and Heritage Compliance
  • In facilitating heritage surveys, they would:
    • Receive notifications
    • Do required mapping or ensure that companies provide required mapping and GPS points for surveys
    • Ensure all work program information is received in accordance with agreements
    • Liaise with the relevant Tjiwarl Elders and heritage officers in relation to the area of country that surveys are on and who are right people for surveys
    • Contact and organise heritage survey participants based on Tjiwarl Liaison Officer Advice
    • Consulting and contracting Anthropologists and Archaeologists for surveys
    • Arrange all of the logistics around heritage surveys, including budgeting and travel needs
    • Following surveys, ensuring that heritage survey reports are received and are in compliance with agreements
    • General dealing with issues that arise during and after surveys
    • Deal with any post survey requirements, such as s18 or s16 matters with companies and Government agencies as required
  • Project to develop a digital repository for Tjiwarl Heritage documents
  • Establish and Maintain electronic register of surveys
  • Facilitate payments to survey participants through accounting provider/internal bookkeeper
  • Advise and contribute to monitoring and evaluation reports
  • Contribute to development and implementation of a strategic plan for caring for country and maintaining connection to country
  • Regular travel on-country
  • Attend heritage meetings and other meetings to represent the CEO when required
  • Adhere to compliance procedures
  • Periodic travel to the Perth and/or Goldfields region to attend meetings as required
  • Be the central conduit to communicating with Mining Companies, CEO and Tjiwarl Heritage Officers on Heritage matters
  • Support the planning of TJIWARL events as required
  • Other duties as required by the CEO

Selection Criteria


  • Have a high level of experience with Culture and Heritage
  • Mapping and geographic information system (GIS) skills
  • High level interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain positive and productive relationships with major partners and stakeholders
  • Cultural competence, particularly with Aboriginal people
  • High level organisational skills and ability to consistently follow-through on tasks
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative
  • Be available to work/travel to Leinster and within the Tjiwarl Native Title area and travel to Perth/Goldfields for meetings when needed
  • Comply with governance and administrative requirements of the role and corporation
  • C Class Driver’s License


  • Experience working with Aboriginal organisations and people

Salary & Benefits

Initially offered up to a one year contract with an immediate start and possible extension.

A competitive salary will be negotiated based on experience.

The role is based in either Perth or the Goldfields with travel as required to the Tjiwarl Native Title area and Perth.
