About Us

Banjima Native Title Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC (BNTAC) is the Prescribed Body Corporate (PBC) that holds native title on trust for the Banjima People.

The Banjima native title determination area covers a large area of land and waters in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. There are approximately 500 adult Banjima People and many more Banjima children.

As well as their roles and responsibilities as a PBC, BNTAC’s objectives also include to provide relief for disadvantaged Aboriginal people, maintain and support traditions, laws, language and culture of Banjima people, as well as provide economic, social and cultural benefits, including housing, training and education.

The Role

Banjima Native Title Aboriginal Corporation is currently experiencing an increase in environmental engagement with key stakeholders in relation to the Environmental Protection Act (EP Act), along with compliance-based land management activities.

Engagement in environmental based activities is becoming central to the core function of BNTAC with increased importance being place on appropriate engagement with Traditional Owners through associated processes. 

The Environmental Advisor position is responsible for developing appropriate frameworks and coordination of environmental activities linked to EP Act applications by key stakeholders, along with facilitating other compliance based environmental activities for the Banjima people. The position will also assist with other core obligations of the Prescribed Body Corporate (PBC) including coordination of heritage and other project engagement where directed.   

The Environmental Advisor will be part of the Native Title Operations team at BNTAC reporting to the Native Title Operations Manager and will work alongside the Implementation Officers and Coordinators.

The Duties:

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Engage with Banjima representatives, mining companies and subject matter experts on environmental matters.
  • Coordinate activities for environmental approvals and other compliance based environmental activities, inclusive of fieldwork and reporting for Social Surround’s consultations and attendance at relevant meetings.
  • Assist in the preparation of work plans and internal budgets for environmental approvals and other compliance based environmental activities.
  • Ensure appropriate workplace health and safety procedures are followed.
  • Ensure appropriate recording and safe storage of data, media and information relating to environmental approvals activities and other compliance based environmental activities. 
  • Ensure that environmental approvals activities and other compliance based environmental activities are implemented, viable and sustainable. 
  • Report regularly to the Native Title Operations Manager on activities and outcomes.
  • Work closely with the Native Title Operations Manager to troubleshoot problems and provide comprehensive feedback to committees.
  • Contribute to the development of other land management projects and opportunities including fee for service work with Banjima Country Management (Rangers) and grant applications. 
  • Represent BNTAC at strategic meetings in the Pilbara and elsewhere.
  • Other duties as directed by the Native Title Operations Manager

Selection Criteria

Essential:

  • Cultural competence and desire to work in the Native Title sector.
  • Tertiary qualifications (minimum of a Bachelor’s degree) and experience in natural resource management, environmental science or related field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in environmental management, preferably in the mining sector.
  • Experience in developing sound and sustainable engagement frameworks in the environmental sector. 
  • Experience in Indigenous engagement, preferably in a native title or land management context including; logistics and community development. 
  • Experience in relationship development, collaboration and working effectively with stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work productively with limited supervision in sometimes complex and remote situations.
  • High-level organisational skills and ability to consistently follow-through on tasks promptly.
  • Well-developed written and oral communications skills;
  • Current manual driver’s license and competence in the use of a manual 4WD vehicle in remote and off-road conditions.
  • Able to obtain a current Police and Working with Vulnerable People Clearances

Desirable:

  • Identify and are recognised as a Banjima person
  • Project management experience.
  • Experience working in the Native Title or Land Management Sector.
  • Mapping and geographic information system (GIS) skills.

Salary & Benefits

  • $90,000pa, plus superannuation

  • The role is based in Perth and regular travel will be required to Pilbara.
