ABOUT US

Healthy Futures is an organisation of healthcare workers and community members taking action to address climate change and related threats to health in Australia. We were set up by two doctors in 2015 and now comprise three staff at a combined total of 1.2 FTE and over 1,000 supporters around Australia. We currently run 3 campaigns:

  1. Healthcare for Clean Air: advocating to reduce harmful pollution from coal fired power stations
  2. Sustainable Super: campaigning for default superannuation funds in the health sector to divest from fossil fuels on health grounds
  3. Repower Health: facilitating health businesses and organisations to shift to 100% renewable energy by installing solar panels and entering into power purchasing agreements

We are an affiliate group of Friends of the Earth Australia.

Our websites are www.healthyfutures.net.au and http://www.repowerhealth.org.au

BACKGROUND:

Climate change is the greatest global health threat of the 21st century, causing hundreds of thousands of deaths worldwide every year through increased extreme weather events, crop failures, famine and spread of infectious diseases. Combustion of fossil fuels for electricity in Australia contributes to climate change and also kills hundreds of Australians every year through toxic air pollution that leads to cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. Many healthcare workers in Australia would like to help address these issues but lack pathways to create systemic change. Our aim is to organise these healthcare workers and utilise their collective voices to advocate for improved public policy to protect health.

ROLE SUMMARY:

You will use digital tools to engage healthcare workers and community members in Australia in Healthy Futures’ campaigns to address climate change and related threats to health. This will include managing our website, NationBuilder database and email blasts, and working with our existing 0.2 FTE social media co-ordinator to manage our social media channels. Your work will help us reach new supporters, provide avenues for their involvement, and amplify the work of our other campaigners.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Overall: Designing and executing strategies to utilise digital tools to increase engagement by healthcare workers in Healthy Futures’ campaigns, in conjunction with campaign staff, volunteers and our current 0.2 FTE social media co-ordinator
  2. Website: Ensuring our NationBuilder-built website www.healthyfutures.net.au provides current, relevant information to our target audience of healthcare workers regarding our campaigns, as well as clear, appealing pathways for healthcare workers to take action to support our campaigns and/or get in touch with us. This will include building and maintaining webpages using HTML and CSS
  3. Database: Helping us optimise our use of NationBuilder to maximise our efficiency in organising our supporters, and make it easy for new staff and volunteers to learn how to use NationBuilder effectively
  4. Email blasts: Write and send out email blasts using NationBuilder and assist other campaign staff and volunteers to do the same
  5. Text blasts: use CallHub to create and send text blasts to our supporters and assist campaign staff and volunteers to do the same where appropriate (less frequently than email blasts)
  6. Social media: collaborating with our current 0.2 FTE social media co-ordinator, other campaign staff and volunteers to create and publish relevant social media content, including graphics and video where useful, to maximise supporter recruitment and engagement
  7. Video: editing and publishing video content where helpful
  8. Online outreach: reaching out to individuals and organisations who have engaged with us online, or who we suspect may have overlapping interests, building positive relationships with them and introducing them to other campaign staff and volunteers where strategic
  9. Responding to online contacts: responding to people who contact us online and putting them in touch with other campaign staff and volunteers where appropriate

DESIRABLE SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

  1. Previous high level work with NationBuilder or similar Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software in an organisation campaigning for social or environmental justice
  2. Experience in building webpages, ideally including creating and customising NationBuilder themes (Bootstrap, SCSS, Liquid)
  3. Experience in social change campaigning or community organising
  4. Experience creating and publishing social media content for an organisation including graphics and videos
  5. Experience writing email blasts for an organisation campaigning for social or environmental justice
  6. Experience creating text blasts, ideally with CallHub
  7. Experience working autonomously within a grassroots setting
