Tell me about the role…

headspace Work and Study is an international first, providing online assistance to young people facing barriers to work and study. Support is tailored to a young person’s needs using strengths based approaches to help them reach their work and study goals. All support happens online, meaning young people right across Australia can access the service. Based on the Individual Placement and Support model of employment support for people living with mental ill health, the service targets 15-25 year olds who are looking to find, engage or maintain work and/or study.

This role works directly with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander young people who are accessing the service, ensuring they receive tailored and appropriate support. The position also works more broadly with community organisations and services, helping to increase access and awareness of the service for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander young people.

Work and Study Specialists (Career Advisors) work directly with a caseload of young people providing appointments via web chat, phone, email and video chat. Specialists also collaborate with educational institutions, employment agencies and employers to assist young people with identifying opportunities and engaging in work and study.

This role works in a small and collaborative team which includes two existing First Nations Work and Study Specialists. This role will work closely with their counterparts to ensure appropriate and effective service support for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander young people. The service also has dedicated clinicians on the team who work with Specialists to provide integrated clinical care to ensure young people can balance their mental health and wellbeing alongside their work/study.

Due to the online and accessible nature of the service, Work and Study Specialists (Career Advisors) may work remotely or in an office setting within their local area. Their knowledge of their community and state/territory is critical for supporting young people, and provides integrated connection to local headspace services, other providers and education and employment opportunities.

You will have experience supporting young people (in particular those who identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person) in the work/study sector, or a related field (eg. health or youth work).

Naturally, you will demonstrate exceptional interpersonal and communication skills along with a proven ability to develop solutions to complex problems and sustain collaborative partnerships with a range of stakeholders including Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander led community organisations in your state or territory.

We offer a flexible and dynamic environment where you have the opportunity to truly make a difference to young Australians. As this service is delivered online and staff can work remotely, you will be supported to work in your local area. This may involve working from home, from a partner organisation and/or from a headspace centre. This will be negotiated with the successful applicant. For the immediate future (as a result of COVID-19) this will be from home. As a result you will need to have access to a safe and confidential work space, and have a reliable internet connection.

This role is offered as a full time position. Applicants may be required to work flexible hours between 7.30 am-7.30pm to ensure all young people can access the service at a time that suits them.

Remuneration is dependent on skills and experience, and includes generous salary packaging opportunities.
