Gippsland Multicultural Services (GMS) is reconnecting with its roots as a Migrant Resource Centre while strengthening its role as an aged care and disability support provider. We’re seeking direct care workers to provide support to enable people to maintain their independence, continue living safely in their homes and participate in their communities.
About the Role
As a Direct Care Worker, you will provide compassionate, person-centred support to clients in their homes, the community and within group programs. You will be helping clients maintain their independence and quality of life. This could include, assisting with personal care, transport, domestic assistance, participation in social and wellbeing activities and supporting group activities. This role will see you work together with clients, families and team members maintaining client dignity, confidentiality, and independence at all times. We are seeking someone who is reliable, respectful, and committed to delivering high-quality care and support.

The Reality Check — What This Role Is Really Like
- This is a hands-on role that may involve personal care, domestic tasks, transport, supporting social involvement and assisting clients with day-to-day life activities.
- No two days are the same — you may work with different clients, in different environments, and adapt to changing needs throughout your shift.
- The role can be physically and emotionally demanding at times, supporting clients experiencing complex health or social needs.
- You will often work independently while also being part of a supportive team that relies on clear communication and reliability.
- Some shifts may start early, finish later in the day, or involve travel between clients and community activities.
- Patience, empathy, professionalism, and a positive attitude are essential in building trust and delivering quality, person-centred support.
Reporting structure:
Direct care workers formally report to the Manager Service Delivery. For day-to-day matters, main contact will usually be the relevant staff member for practice support, HR administration, or rostering.
Key Selection Criteria
- Meets minimum qualification requirements, including:
- Certificate III or IV in Aged Care, Certificate III in Individual Support, or Certificate IV in Disability.
- Current First Aid & CPR Certificates or willingness to acquire before commencement.
- NDIS Worker Screening Check https://www.vic.gov.au/ndis-worker-screening-check or willingness to attain one
- Working with Children Check Working with Children Check | vic.gov.au or willingness to attain one
- Able to work in Australia
- Full drivers licence, own reliable vehicle and comprehensive care insurance
- Good verbal communication skills and ability to relate well to members of the target group. Second language highly advantageous.
- Understanding of the needs and issues faced by members of the disability and ageing communities in Gippsland from diverse backgrounds.
- To be self-motivated and have excellent organisational and planning skills.
- A current Victorian driver’s license.
- Access to own vehicle for work purposes with comprehensive car insurance.
- Commitment to attending ongoing training and professional development.
- Ability to work cooperatively as a member of a team and to be accountable within the organisation and abide by GMS policies and procedures.
- Ability to use a smart phone for rostering purposes.
