About GECA

Good Environmental Choice Australia (GECA) runs Australia's only independent, not-for-profit, multi-sector ecolabelling program and is the only Australian member of the Global Ecolabelling Network (GEN).

Our transparent certification program develops standards against which products and services can be independently assessed by external assurance providers. Standards are developed following ISO 14024 principles for global best practice in ecolabelling.

GECA's scheme enables consumers to choose from thousands of certified products and services and have confidence that they have a lower impact on the environment and human health and address important social considerations.

GECA's dedicated and hardworking team is located in Sydney and operates as a remote organisation providing our employees the flexibility and fantastic opportunity to work from home. The team meets in person in Sydney on a weekly basis.

Job Summary

The role of the Standards and Technical Officer is to undertake the development and revision of environmental product standards by researching and interpreting scientific information, utilising information from other ecolabel schemes, and consulting with stakeholders and technical experts. The Standards and Technical Officer, as part of the GECA standards team, writes and manages related documentation and reports to support standards development. They also revise and update guidelines and policies, and support or perform other activities as required.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Developing and revising environmental product standards based on ISO 14024 and criteria for environmental Claims Authentication based on ISO 14021.
  • Researching and reporting scientific and technical information using for example scientific databases, other ecolabel scheme standards, and published articles and reports.
  • Replying to technical or standards related enquiries, in particular in relation to chemical and hazardous substances questions
  • Engaging and consulting with stakeholders, technical experts, and external auditors.
  • Providing technical advice to other GECA staff and the Standards Committee on all aspects of the operation of the GECA scheme.
  • Cultivating enduring and effective relationships with GECA stakeholders, such as the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) and the Global Ecolabelling Network (GEN).
  • Creating and updating standards, guidelines and policies, such as for example Scheme Rules and Standards Development Guidelines.
  • Other tasks as required including for example preparation of presentations.

Qualifications, Knowledge/Skills and Personal Characteristics

  • Post graduate qualification in Chemistry, Environmental Science, Engineering or other relevant disciplines with some work experience.
  • A background in ecolabelling, standards development or conformance matters is desirable.
  • Demonstrated research skills including critical selection and interpretation of online sources.
  • Profound chemistry knowledge; knowledge of hazard classification systems desirable.
  • Critical thinking.
  • Demonstrated ability to write reports of technical nature and less formal communications for e.g. consultation with stakeholders.
  • An understanding of environmental issues relevant to the Australian environment, particularly the built environment.
  • Ability to comprehend and summarise information from a broad range of technical and scientific areas related to standards categories (e.g. paper and pulp manufacturing, hazardous chemicals and dangerous goods in cleaning and personal care products).
  • Self-motivated and driven, with the ability to work autonomously managing workloads or as part of a team. Good attention to detail.
  • Good interpersonal, written and oral communication skills, as well as good organisational and administrative abilities.
  • Familiarity with sustainable production for building and architectural markets, with the capacity to develop understanding in other sectors and markets is desirable.
  • Understanding of Green Building Council of Australia's Green Star program is highly desirable.
  • Understanding of safety data sheet (SDS) and knowledge of risk assessment of industrial chemical compounds and mixtures is desirable.
  • Familiarity with REACH, AICIS (NICNAS) chemicals inventories and Safe Work Australia guidelines is a benefit
