General Manager - The Purpose Precinct

The Purpose Precinct is a ‘social and circular’ cluster of social enterprises within the Queen Victoria Market that has retail spaces, shared infrastructure and services, and a host of experiences and participatory activities. The project is being delivered in partnership by two social enterprises, Good Cycles and STREAT. Having opened in December 2022 the Purpose Precinct is primed to expand into a greater area of the Queen Victoria Market space, and this role will expand with it.

Good Cycles is building a sustainable social enterprise and growing its service offering across retail, fleet maintenance and a growing range of services for cities.

About STREAT

STREAT is a leading food system social enterprise and youth organisation based in inner Melbourne. For the past decade, we have provided holistic support, training and employment pathways in hospitality to over 1500 vulnerable young Victorians. Our Youth Program sits alongside a portfolio of businesses (including 8 cafes, a coffee roastery, an artisan bakery, and a catering business).

About the Purpose Precinct

The objectives of the precinct will be:

  • Sector growth – Grow the social enterprise sector’s visibility and vitality
  • Priority jobs – Create a host of jobs for priority job seekers
  • Circular innovation – Develop new green products and services for the circular economy
  • Activated people & places – Activate people & places to be change-makers for a safe and just future.

As part of a great team, your role will be to oversee and deliver on the establishment and ongoing operation of the recently established Purpose Precinct at Queen Victoria Market, bringing together a collection of social enterprises.

This role will liaise with all key stakeholders, suppliers, funders and partners to ensure the delivery of ongoing operations of the next stage of the Purpose Precinct’s growth is realised. Building upon the progress made thus far and ensuring that the space can function to meet its full potential now, and for the years following.

As the Purpose Precinct grows there is exciting potential for this role to evolve and grow, commencing at GM level and progressing to CEO.

Example responsibilities and tasks

  • Liaise with key stakeholders internally and externally
  • Coordination of multi-site setup, fit-out and operationalisation
  • Setup and delivery of ongoing project reporting across varied stakeholders
  • Preparation of, and delivery to budget

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in relatable field of study
  • 5 years experience in project management
  • Experience in public and private tender submission
  • Experience in production of business plans including financial modelling
  • Experience in social procurement (preferred)
  • Experience in social enterprise (preferred)
  • Experience in retail or hospitality (preferred)

  • Able to work independently, efficiently and prioritise work effectively
  • Flexibility and adaptability across a wide range of work requirements
  • A commitment to helping people who are experiencing disadvantage
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Proficiency with Google Suite, MS Word and Excel.
