Established in 2005, Green Collect (GC) is an award-winning social enterprise achieving significant social and environmental impact through new sustainability services and job creation for people experiencing social and skills disadvantage. We are about to embark on an exciting expansion that will grow the circular economy and deepen our impacts as we scale our resource recovery and retail services.

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) position has been created to help lead the implementation of GC’s 3 Year Strategic plan and fulfil a range of duties critical to its success. This new senior role will provide direct leadership to the enterprise, providing support to the CEO and the Executive team and driving strategic operations. Combined with proven business acumen, this person will lead with compassion and shine in the context of working alongside a diverse staff group in a lean but rapidly growing enterprise.

The Chief Operating Officer will deliver desired results aligned with the current strategy, mission and values of the enterprise to support our next stage of growth and enable GC to deepen its impact. The COO will enable GC to scale operations, capabilities and management systems and drive operational excellence and change across the organisation, covering a wide range of functions, including: Business; Finance & Administration; Infrastructure & Resources; Risk Management; People & Culture; and Communications.

This full-time role will be predominantly based at Green Collect’s site in Melbourne’s inner west, with some degree of flexible working arrangements.

The role includes

  1. Strategic planning
  2. Operationalising strategy
  3. Monitoring business and trading performance against targets
  4. Guiding change management and continuous improvement
  5. Developing operating models to support business strategy
  6. Project planning, management and reporting
  7. Staff management and development

About the role

We are looking for an experienced and highly skilled senior leader who will be accountable for the delivery of a broad range of initiatives to assist in the growth of Green Collect. This person will improve GC’s internal management capabilities, having a positive impact on the organisation’s operating efficiency, effectiveness and overall sustainability. They will reflect and promote the vision and values of Green Collect, and deeply resonate with the ethos of the enterprise in relation to its social and environmental objectives.

The COO will have the required knowledge, skills, insight and personal confidence to step into a senior role that provides the leadership and encouragement for each team member to meaningfully contribute to GC’s mission. A key aspect of this role will be supporting GC’s team to thrive in a challenging and changing work environment in its next phase of growth.

This senior role, within a highly multifaceted organisation, will require an experienced leader who demonstrates compassion, determination, teamwork and self-awareness. Excellent people skills, experience in non-profit or business scaling, business and financial acumen and a commitment to ecological and social justice are essential.

Key responsibilities

  1. Work with the CEO and senior staff to develop and implement GC’s strategic plan
  2. Drive organisational growth and development through overseeing the implementation and monitoring of strategic priorities, milestones and budgets
  3. Oversee and enable the work of key staff (Business, Finance, Communications, Operations)
  4. Evaluate GC’s performance and impact by analysing and interpreting data against impact metrics
  5. Review and maintenance of risk register
  6. Support and inform the CEO in all matters of importance with thorough communication and reporting
  7. Assist the CEO to prepare communication materials for stakeholders including funders and Board
  8. Establish policies and approaches that reflect GC’s values, vision and culture as a diverse, safe and inclusive workplace
  9. Help build and develop high-performing teams aligned with GC’s vision, mission and strategy
  10. Provide and ensure that staff receive professional support and supervision to identify and address training and support needs

Skills required

  1. Proven experience as Chief Operating Officer or similar role
  2. Experience in managing business growth and complex operations in a relevant setting
  3. Demonstrated competency in strategic planning and business development
  4. Understanding of business functions such as finance, risk, HR, communications and marketing
  5. Excellent writing and communication skills
  6. Demonstrated the ability to build, train and develop high-performing teams
  7. Ability to multi-task and address multiple moving pieces and make strategic decisions
  8. Ability to create a positive, professional, welcoming and inclusive organisational culture that supports diversity and a sense of belonging
  9. Working knowledge of data analysis and performance/operation metrics
  10. Working knowledge of IT/Business infrastructure
  11. Experience in social enterprise finance and management desirable
  12. Qualifications in business/commerce/management or other relevant discipline desirable
