Goldfields Community Legal Centre (GCLC) is a friendly and passionate team devoted to assisting people in understanding and exercising their legal rights. We advise and provide advocacy and education in a broad range of areas, including tenancy, family law; restraining orders; wills and estates, criminal injuries compensation, and other civil law matters.

About the Role

To thrive in this role requires adaptive problem solving and excellent communication and interpersonal skills. The Advocate will be responsible for breaking down current Tenancy Legislations to advise both private and social housing tenants in a number of scenarios. Such as:

  • Letters of support
  • Property repairs
  • Termination of the lease by tenant or lessor
  • General Rights and responsibilities as a tenant
  • Matters involving rent, bond money, and other disputes.

The Tenant Advocate will also be required to provide referrals, casework, and court representation when necessary and develop, deliver, and evaluate community education programs on tenancy matters.

Essential Criteria

  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant field such as community services, community development, social work, or law/legal studies, or progress toward completion.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of residential tenancies legislation and Department of Housing policies (rights and responsibilities of tenants, and human rights and social justice issues) or willingness to learn.
  • Highly developed interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills to prioritise and manage multiple and competing work tasks and deliver to agreed deadlines.
  • Ability to tailor presentations to suit a specific target group or age range.
  • Experience in or demonstrated capacity to represent clients in a formal setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound professional judgment and to work independently.
  • Competency in using Microsoft and electronic communication programs.
  • Ability to travel.
  • Unrestricted C class driver’s license.
  • National Police Clearance.
  • Working with Children’s Check.
  • Must be up to date with all vaccinations.

Desirable:

  • Previous experience working in a legal environment, within the Department of Housing sector, or the Real Estate industry.
  • Previous experience working with legal processes or legal and/or human rights and social justice sector.
  • Understanding the residential tenancies legislation, the Department of Housing policies, and human rights issues.
  • Demonstrated experience in advocacy, mediation, and negotiation.
  • Court experience.
  • Previous experience in presenting information to groups.
