The Geelong Animal Welfare Society (GAWS) is a not-for-profit organisation providing pound, shelter and veterinary services to the Geelong region. The Role

GAWS is recruiting for an important leadership role looking after the kennel operations.

The Supervisor - Kennel, reporting directly to the CEO, is a key role at GAWS to ensure business and operational continuity and 'role model' GAWS values and behaviours through leading and managing Animal Care Attendants and Volunteers. The role is diverse and integral to GAWS, and enforces policies and procedures to ensure efficient functioning of work areas. The focus of the position is to:

  • Provide a high level of welfare and care to the animals residing at GAWS in accordance with legislation and the Code of Practice for Shelters and Pounds;
  • Lead a team of Staff and Volunteers aligned with GAWS values;
  • Provide a high level of customer service;
  • Promote a positive image of the shelter to members of the public and other stakeholders.

This is a permanent role with full-time or part-time hours (4 days a week) negotiable. Organisational induction, ongoing training and learning programs are available to support personal and career development.

Experience & Skills

To be considered for this position you must be able to demonstrate:

  • Certificate III in Animal Studies or Certificate III in Companion Animal services or a related field;
  • The husbandry and care of relevant animals to meet their physical and behavioural requirements;
  • Successful experience in managing operations in a budget-constraint environment;
  • Strong understanding of animal behaviour; confident in reading, assessing and rehabilitating;
  • Planning and organising skills to effectively manage workloads, determine priorities and meet deadlines;
  • Tact and ability to communicate appropriately at all levels with different personalities;
  • Ability to successfully balance conflicting requirements of multiple stakeholders to meet objectives;
  • Working effectively and using initiative with discretion and judgement;
  • Sheltermate operation (Preferred but not essential);
  • A valid driver’s license.

Successful experience working in a not-for-profit environment with limited resources would be highly regarded.
