ABOUT THE POSITION

We are growing and expanding our services, and are currently seeking Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Counsellors to deliver outreach, therapeutic healing and counselling supports to our Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community - including youth and adults.

PLEASE NOTE This is an identified position to be filled by Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islanders as permitted by and arguable under sections 25, 104 and 105 of the Queensland Anti-Discrimination Act (1991)

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Provide culturally appropriate and trauma-informed counselling, maintaining cultural safety, confidentiality, and respect for self-determination
  • Liase effectively with appropriate support services and programs relevant to the clients healing process
  • Have high professional ethics and standards to work alongside other team members
  • Prepare reports as appropriate.

ABOUT YOU

To best deliver these services, we're looking for qualified and experienced Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who:

  • Are able to communicate effectively and manage a group dynamic
  • Have a high standard of communication and conflict resolution skills
  • Have computer skills and be willing to learn new systems
  • Work as an effective team member
  • Are prepared and willing to have on-going professional development, including professional supervision
  • Have or are eligible for a Yellow card, Blue Card and are willing to undertake a Criminal History Check.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

You are experienced in:

  • Working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Social and Emotional Wellbeing Sector
  • Being sensitive to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander culture and contemporary issues, especially for men and women with alcohol and other drug issues
  • Being able to create a safe place
  • Delivering Trauma-Informed practices such as Narrative Therapy, Strength Based Therapies, CBT (desireable or willingness to learn) 
  • Group facilitation and team dynamics (desirable but not mandatory)
  • Working with youth (optional)

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Diploma of Counselling or equivalent (desirable)
  • 2-5 years experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • A current driver's license (required)
