'Strzelecki Koala' Outreach Coordinator

Friends of the Earth

About Us

Friends of the Earth (FoE) Melbourne is a not-for-profit community based organisation working for a socially equitable and environmentally sustainable future for more than 40 years. Friends of the Earth Melbourne is an anti hierarchical organisation and a local member group of the national federation known as Friends of the Earth Australia, which in turn is the country member of Friends of the Earth International. The broader Friends of the Earth International network has over 5,000 local branches across the globe and is the world's largest grassroots environmental network with over 2 million members and supporters around the world. FoE campaigns from the local to the global on today's most urgent environmental and social issues; challenging the current model of economic and corporate neoliberal globalisation, and promoting solutions to create environmentally sustainable and socially just societies.

About the Role

Friends of the Earth are seeking a highly organised and motivated Strzelecki Koala Outreach Coordinator to help ensure the long term survival of Victoria’s only endemic koala population.

Friends of the Earth Melbourne has campaigned in Victoria’s Strzelecki Ranges in South Gippsland since the mid 1990’s. The culmination of this work has been the creation of the Brataualung Forest Reserve, which will total 8,000 ha by 2027.

The Strzeleckis and South Gippsland region are the home to Victoria’s only endemic koala population. Because of its unique genetics, the Strzelecki koala is the key to the preservation of the animal in Victoria and South Australia.

Since 2013, FoE has been involved in koala surveys work in the region. The work has helped identify key koala tree species, key koala locations and an estimated population size.

During 2021 FoE plans to undertake more surveys in the region, focussing on areas that have not been surveyed before. The findings of these surveys will help FoE’s goal to see the Strzelecki koala listed under the federal Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act, similar to koala populations in New South Wales and Queensland.
