Context

Friends of the Earth (FoE) works with a range of different projects and affiliates supporting grassroots movements, through which we seek to cultivate a culture of safety and wellbeing in activist spaces. This role will work across the Federation to help members build proactive cultures of wellbeing and safety whilst also providing responsive capacity and processes for crisis management.

Key Responsibilities

Work with Friends of the Earth members to build deeper and stronger cultures of wellbeing, and safety into all of our work. This would include:

  • Working with FoE members to implement processes and policies for mitigating and responding to risks relating to the safety and wellbeing of the volunteers we work with, especially young people under the age of 18.
  • Building a working group of volunteers, staff and experts advisors to oversee and implement this work more proactively across the FoE federation
  • Identifying gaps in knowledge, process and understanding of safety and wellbeing and working with the safety and wellbeing team (above) to fill these through the creation and delivery of training, guides, policies advice and other support
  • Identifying and sharing external resources, trainings and opportunities relating to safety and wellbeing with relevant members of the Federation
  • Providing advice to FoE members about safety and wellbeing in relation to their work
  • Working with FoE to manage crises if and when they arise.

Please Note: this role is not for providing counselling or 1-1 support to FoE members and affiliates. That lies with external professional organisations.

Required Skills/Qualities

You are someone with:

  • A passion for environmental and social justice and the power of social movements
  • Professional qualifications in the fields of social work and/or mental health and at least 5 years working with children and adults in mental health settings OR youth work OR counselling services
  • A talent for building and convening collaborative teams of volunteers and staff to work on shared projects
  • A brain that is always on the lookout for opportunities and resources that can be shared with others
  • An empathetic, clear and compassionate communicator
  • Experience developing risk mitigation and management plans for complex situations / crises
  • Excellent at managing your time and working under pressure
  • Excellent conflict resolution and advanced facilitation skills
  • Current working with children check and experience working with u18s

Desired skills/qualities

  • Experience working in not for profit sector
  • Experience working with consensus decision making
  • Experience working in non hierarchical structures
  • Great connections and networks across the youth and mental health sectors
  • Experience working with people from a diverse range of ages (particularly young people) and backgrounds

Works with

This role will work particularly with our u18 youth members and across the federation of Friends of the Earth Australia affiliates and members. It will also be required to work with FoE staff, volunteers and external experts to scale up internal and community capacity so that all of this work does not all sit on the shoulders of this position.

Time commitment

This is a full time position, 5 days or 40 hours per week. Given the role involves working with a range of different members and volunteers, it will require regular out of hours work, however FoE has flexible TOIL arrangements in place to compensate for this.

Salary

The salary for this position is the Friends of the Earth flat wage of $73,840, excluding super. This salary is negotiable based on skills and experience. All out of pocket work expenses will also be reimbursed. The position is subject to a probationary period of three months.

Location

Flexible with a preference for Melbourne.
