Senior Employment Lawyer

WEstjustice

ABOUT THE ROLE

WEstjustice is seeking to employ a Senior Employment Lawyer on a fixed term contract ending August 2021 (with potential for a longer-term contract depending on availability of funding) to join our well-regarded Employment & Discrimination Law team. The position is a part-time position (0.6EFT), however requests for greater/less EFT will be considered. We are seeking an experienced employment lawyer with a proven ability to relate to and work with vulnerable workers who have experienced workplace exploitation.

This exciting opportunity is available for an experienced employment lawyer eager to work in an innovative community justice environment, within a dynamic team, and who is focussed on helping vulnerable workers. Experience in discrimination law would also be highly regarded for this role.

The Senior Employment Lawyer will be employed as a member of the WEstjustice Employment and Discrimination Law (EDLP) team. They will undertake work for a range of clients including people from newly-arrived communities, international students and other temporary migrant workers, young people and other identified vulnerable worker groups who have experienced workplace exploitation. The primary matters we assist with include underpayment of wages and entitlements, unfair dismissals and general protections matters, unsafe work practices and employment-related discrimination and sexual harassment.

The focus of the EDLP is to improve the lives of vulnerable workers through information, education, community development, casework and advocacy (including conciliations and tribunal/court appearances) as well as policy and systemic impact work.

Please note that due to COVID-19, all WEstjustice offices and clinics are currently operating remotely. Once normal business operations resume, the Senior Employment Lawyer will be based at our Footscray office but will be required work at least one or more days per week at our clinic sites (located in the western suburbs of Melbourne including Sunshine & Werribee, or the CBD).

This is a fantastic opportunity for a senior employment lawyer who wants to work with vulnerable clients to improve access to justice and to address the systemic issues that contribute to the high rates of work exploitation experienced by vulnerable workers.

Salary range - $80,000 – $85,000 per annum (depending on experience), plus employer-funded superannuation in accordance with Superannuation Guarantee (Administration) Act 1992 (Cth).
