The Senior Women’s Criminal and Outreach Lawyer will work to meet the legal needs of criminalised women, by providing skilled and responsive legal information, advice, and representation in the areas of criminal law, family violence, infringements, VOCAT, tenancy and child protection. The position will work closely with outreach partners and other support services to provide a holistic practice, supporting clients in relation to a range of complex needs including housing, family violence, health (including alcohol and drugs and mental health), family and social connections, and any impacts relating to COVID-19, and ensuring a woman-centred and feminist response.
The Senior Women’s Criminal and Outreach Lawyer will also work collaboratively with FLS’s Social Action and Public Interest Law team to enable systemic change in the criminal justice system by building and consolidating understanding of the links between, gender and women’s criminalisation, collecting data and information, and influencing the development of laws and policies through systemic advocacy.
To be successful in this position, you will have at least 3 years post admission legal practice experience, a strong understanding of the drivers of women’s incarceration in Victoria and the legal and social issues that relate to women from diverse backgrounds with multiple and complex needs; and experience providing legal advice and representation, including court advocacy for clients experiencing multiple forms of systemic disadvantage.
