Primary Therapist - AOD Intensive Outpatient Program

The First Step Program

First Step: About Us

First Step is an addiction & mental health outpatient clinic that has been operating in the City of Port Phillip for just on 20 years. Our uniquely multi-disciplinary treatment model seeks to support people via incremental, whole of life improvements including in the areas of physical health, mental health, social wellbeing & legal support. We strive to be highly accessible, providing services free of charge and without referral for our cohort, many of whom have highly complex histories that may include out of home care, early school leaving, abuse and neglect.

The First Step family of practitioners extends to GPs, hepatitis C specialists, mental health nurses, drug and alcohol workers, psychologists, care coordinators, caseworkers, educators and psychiatrists. Uniquely, we also boast a fully integrated pro-bono legal clinic for clients engaged in treatment at First Step.

First Step is committed to the philosophy of harm minimisation and is excited to include a treatment modality that caters to those ready to extend their treatment goals.

At First Step we believe that everybody deserves every chance to turn their lives around.

Primary Therapist: About the Role

The Primary Therapist, Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), is a key member of a multi-disciplinary team whose role it is to deliver an intensive outpatient treatment service to individuals ready to take the next step in the treatment of their complex and problematic alcohol and other drugs use.

The Primary Therapist will use a range of treatment interventions including Assessment, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and psychoeducation in the delivery of this integrated Intensive Outpatient Program. These interventions will be used in both individual and group treatment sessions.

Adherence to structural and clinical fidelity has been shown to be an important determinant of success for this program. Actively adhering to the manualised treatment materials; consistent scheduling and facilitation of individual and group sessions; collection of weekly random drug/alcohol screens (note this is to inform treatment and is NOT a punitive measure); monitoring of group size; involvement of peers as co-leaders (when appropriate); and actively engaging clients throughout the process are all important elements of the Primary Therapist role.
