Overview:

  • The First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria (the Assembly) is the voice of Aboriginal people in Victoria in building the Treaty process. It is made up of Victorian Traditional Owners, elected by Aboriginal Communities, for Aboriginal Communities, to advance their rights, interests and benefits.
  • The Assembly works with the State to establish Treaty processes that recognise the sovereignty of the First Peoples of Victoria, support self-determination and empowerment, and realise human rights, to make Victoria stronger for everyone.

This role is responsible for contributing to developing actions and processes (policy) that supports the Assembly to build the Treaty process in Victoria. The role will involve working on projects, providing administrative support to committees and working group meetings, and communicating with Aboriginal organisations and communities in Victoria.

Key Duties:

  • Contribute to developing information, actions and procedures (ie policy) on Treaty and related matters that are provided to Assembly staff, Assembly members and/or external stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the work of the Policy team by developing community engagement materials (eg fact sheets, slide packs), collate responses from community and do research.
  • Provide administrative support for meetings (ie Committee meetings) including preparing agendas, note taking, preparing minutes, sending invites, participating in meetings and follow actions as required.
  • Contribute to developing written and verbal advice to the CEO, Co-Chairs and Assembly Management team on the Treaty process and related matters. This could involve writing briefs, emails or developing other documents that provide information and advice.
  • Support the Assembly team across all its work.

Skills and experience required:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of Victorian Aboriginal Communities.
  • Able to problem solve and understand an issue from many viewpoints.
  • Strong communication skills - able to write clearly and plainly for different audiences, and able to explain complex issues so they can be understood by different audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage and collaborate to create and maintain positive work relationships in and outside of an organisation.
  • Previous experience in a policy role OR related position such as engagement and communication, legal or advocacy with exposure to policy design, development, implementation and/or communication.
  • An understanding of how Government works.
  • Able to and enjoys working to challenging deadlines.
  • Equivalent experience or Degree in a relevant area.

Key Selection Criteria:

Demonstrated capacity to work effectively and with integrity in the context of a Victorian Traditional Owner representative body

Willing and able to support the leadership of an organisation that is Aboriginal controlled and representative of Aboriginal communities in Victoria. Demonstrated understanding of the Aboriginal community in Victoria. Able to navigate complex relationships and act in accordance with the Assembly values. Willing and able to behave in a way that supports the achievement of the Assembly values and builds the reputation of the Assembly.

Demonstrated experience in problem solving, analysis, seeing an issue from different viewpoints and thinking creatively about an issue

Experience in problem solving, analysis, thinking creatively about an issue, including the ability to understand an issue from different viewpoints. May involve research and developing actions, processes and information. Willing and able to support Policy Managers and Head of Policy and Negotiations to deliver complex policy projects, briefings and other materials within timeframes, and in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

Strong Written and Verbal Skills

Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write and speak clearly and plainly to different audiences. Experience writing documents to a good standard, including briefings, engagement materials, guidance documents, submissions or reports. Able to think and write at a high level while also having attention to detail.

Demonstrated capacity for engagement and collaboration

Engages stakeholders and the community, establishes and builds relationships within and outside the Assembly including board, members, staff and other leaders in Victoria who play a critical role in achieving Treaties. Able to understand and manage a range of expectations, and develop and implement solutions in a collaborative manner.

Great organisational skills to plan and manage work

Able to manage competing and changing priorities and timeframes to deliver advice and projects to a high standard and on time. Has experience working on projects and knowledge of different methodologies and approaches.

Technical Skills: MS Office proficiency

Reports To: Policy Manager

Salary & Term:

  • Ongoing, subject to continued funding
  • Salary of $85,000 - $97,000 per annum (full-time equivalent) plus superannuation, based on experience and expertise of the occupant.
  • Generous salary sacrificing due to the Assembly’s Public Benevolent Institution status.
